Isabelle Barratt-Delia
Isabelle Barratt-Delia (née Gulia; born 1938) is the first recorded female Maltese architect of the 20th century. Early life and education Barratt-Delia was born in Malta in 1938. She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, St Julian's. In 1961, she graduated as an architect and civil engineer from the Royal University of Malta in Valletta, now known as the University of Malta. Career Barratt-Delia worked at Mortimer and de Giorgio Architects for a short period of time, before leaving for Canada. She worked for the Canadian Exhibition Commission between 1962 and 1964 and participated in fairs in New York City, Milan, Frankfurt and Sydney. Personal life Barratt-Delia met Peter Barratt, an architect and urban planner, while working at Mortimer and de Giorgio Architects. Women Architects
Women in architecture have been documented for many centuries, as professional (or amateur) practitioners, educators and clients. Since architecture became organized as a profession in 1857, the number of women in architecture has been low. At the end of the 19th century, starting in Finland, certain schools of architecture in Europe began to admit women to their programmes of study. In 1980 M. Rosaria Piomelli, born in Italy, became the first woman to hold a deanship of any school of architecture in the United States, as Dean of the City College of New York School of Architecture. Mortimer And De Giorgio
Roger de Giorgio (Milan, Italy 29 December 1922 – Malta 5 February 2016) was a Maltese architect and a member of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Royal Historic Society. Biography In Milan, he attended Carlo Pisacane School. He studied at the University of Malta and graduated as an architect and civil engineer in 1946. De Giorgio was a senior partner of Mortimer and de Giorgio between 1948 and 1968, Mortimer, de Giorgio and Partners between 1968 and 1971, Malta Consult between 1972 and 1977 and Roger de Giorgio and Partners. He became an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1956, eventually being elected as a fellow in 1958.
