Iraqi National League (Institutions)
The 1973–74 Iraqi National First Division was a football tournament organised by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) in the 1973–74 season, which was formed as the top-tier national league in Iraq to replace the Iraq Central FA League and the Basra, Kirkuk and Mosul leagues. The tournament began on 11 October 1973. Matches that ended in a draw were settled via penalty shootout (with no extra time), with the winner of the shootout earning one point. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya won the league title with a total of 23 points, and they also won the regional Iraq FA Baghdad Cup knockout tournament in the same season, led by coach Abdelilah Mohammed Hassan. From the 1974–75 season, the competition was replaced by the Iraqi National Clubs First Division which was only open to clubs and not institute-representative teams. Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya ( ar, نادي القوة الجوية الرياضي, lit=Air Force Club) is an Iraqi sports club based in Rusafa District, Baghdad that competes in the Iraqi Premier League, the top-flight of Iraqi football. Founded in 1931, it is the oldest existing club in Iraq. Its football team is one of the most successful in Iraq having won seven Iraqi Premier League titles, most recently in the 2020–21 season, which it won alongside its fifth Iraq FA Cup title. The club also won a joint-record three Iraqi Elite Cups, and in 1996–97 it became the first of only two clubs to win all four major national trophies (League, FA Cup, Elite Cup, Super Cup) in the same season. Basra
Basra ( ar, ٱلْبَصْرَة, al-Baṣrah) is an Iraqi city located on the Shatt al-Arab. It had an estimated population of 1.4 million in 2018. Iraq Division One
The Iraq Division One is the second-highest division of the Iraqi football league system after the Premier League. The league is contested by 24 clubs. It is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA). Each season, the two top-finishing teams in the Division One are automatically promoted to the Premier League. The four lowest-finishing teams in the Division One are relegated to Division Two. The number of clubs in the league have changed throughout history, most recently in the 2021–22 season when the number of clubs decreased from 28 to 24. Al-Etisalat FC
Al-Etisalat Sports Club (''The Communications'', ar, الاتصالات), is an Iraqi football team based in Baghdad was called Al-Bareed before season 2009/10. They play in the Iraqi Premier League. The Al-Bareed team was founded in 1963, and was merged with Al-Minaa for the 1974–75 season to form Al-Muwasalat. Al-Naqil FC
Al-Naqil Sports Club ( ar, نادي النقل الرياضي, meaning ''Transport Sports Club''), was an Iraqi sports club based in Baghdad that was founded in 1937 under the name Al-Sikak Al-Hadeed ( ar, السكك الحديد, meaning ''Railways''). They were renamed Al-Naqil in 1974, competing in the first season of the Iraqi Premier League (the top tier of Iraqi club football) and finishing as runners-up. The club was dissolved in 1975 as they had no administration or financial backing. Their football players left to join newly-promoted club Al-Zawraa, who went on to become one of Iraqi football's most successful clubs. Quwat Salahaddin ( ar, قوات صلاح الدين, lit=''Salahaddin Forces'') was an Iraqi football team based in Habbaniyah which competed in the Iraq Central FA League from the 1962–63 season until the 1972–73 season. They also competed in Iraq's first national football league in the 1973–74 season. Babil Sport Club ( ar, نادي بابل الرياضي), is an Iraqi football club based in Babil, that plays in Iraq Division One. History Babil Sport Club was founded in 1960. The team has played in the Iraqi Premier League since the start of the tournament in 1974, and They had played for four seasons, and in all of them it had been struggling to stay away from relegation. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place.
