Iqaluit City Council
Iqaluit City Council is the governing body of the city of Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. As of November 2019, the council consists of mayor Kenny Bell and councillors Joanasie Akumalik, Simon Nattaq, Romeyn Stevenson, Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster, Solomon Awa, Kyle Sheppard, Sheila Flaherty and Malaiya Lucassie. From 1964 to 1979, Frobisher Bay was led by community council and chair. After 1979–1980, Frobisher Bay had a town council and mayor and since 2001 a city council and a mayor. Madeleine Redfern
Madeleine Redfern (born 1967) is a Canadian Inuit politician, who was elected mayor of Iqaluit, Nunavut in a by-election on December 13, 2010. She was the city's mayor until 2019. She was born in Iqaluit (then called Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories). Redfern graduated from the Akitsiraq Law School before becoming the first Inuk to be offered a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Canada. She was selected by outgoing Justice Louise Arbour to clerk under her replacement, Justice Louise Charron. Redfern is a businessperson, consultant and social advocate in Iqaluit, and was most recently the executive director of the Qikiqtani Truth Commission, looking into the legacy of historical effects of federal government policies on Eastern Arctic Inuit during the period from the 1950s through the 1980s. Nunavut ( , ; iu, ᓄᓇᕗᑦ , ; ) is the largest and northernmost territory of Canada. It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the ''Nunavut Act'' and the '' Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act'', which provided this territory to the Inuit for independent government. The boundaries had been drawn in 1993. The creation of Nunavut resulted in the first major change to Canada's political map in half a century since the province of Newfoundland was admitted in 1949. Bryan Pearson (30 May 1934 – 12 October 2016), nicknamed ''Sedluk'' or ''Salluk'', meaning skinny in Inuktitut, was a territorial level politician from the Northwest Territories, in what is now Nunavut, Canada. Early life Pearson was born in Liverpool, England 30 May 1934. He had two siblings, a brother - Robert and a sister - Val Pearson, who grew up in the Wirral Merseyside. Pearson joined the Merchant Navy when he was about 15. After working on ships in Britain and Australia he came to Canada in 1956 and went to Baffin Island. He was hired to work at the Distant Early Warning Line site on Padloping Island in the kitchen. Janet Brewster
Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster (born 1969 or 1970) is a Canadian Inuk politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2021 Nunavut general election. She represents the electoral district of Iqaluit-Sinaa. Prior to her election to the legislature, Brewster served on Iqaluit City Council, including a stint as deputy mayor of the city.
