Ipswich () is the central suburb and central business district of Ipswich in the City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It is also known as Ipswich CBD (central business district). In the , the suburb had a population of 2,459 people. Geography The suburb is situated on the Bremer River. The suburb of Ipswich has a number of distinct areas. The Ipswich central business district is in the north with the Bremer River forming the northern boundary. Limestone Hill and its parklands are to the east (). Denmark Hill with its exclusive residential area and conservation park is to the west (). A mixture of health, educations and residential areas make up the south. The Queensland National Bank is a heritage-listed former bank building at 89 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1877 to 1935. It is also known as National Bank of Australasia and Bank of Queensland. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The Queensland National Bank building is a single storey rendered brick building originally constructed as an office in 1877. The original architect and builder are not known. The first building on the site was George Thorn's Queen's Arms Hotel, built in 1843. This was demolished probably and the land sold as separate allotments. The corner site was bought by surveyor and real estate agent Enoch Bostock who constructed an office which opened for business on 1 January 1878. Ulster Hotel
Ulster Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel at 25 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1910. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The land on which the Ulster Hotel stands, allotment 10 of section 27, was originally purchased by Martin Byrne on 1 November 1851 for £12. From 1872 the Horse and Jockey hotel was operating on the land in a low-set timber building with a shingle roof and attic windows. The first publican was William Thompson who ran the hotel from 1872 to 1880. Thomas Breen then took over the hotel and changed the name to the Ulster Hotel in 1881 and subsequently the hotel changed hands many times in the last years of the 19th century. On 19 August 1892 the land was transferred to Patrick O'Sullivan and on 25 October 1892 O'Sullivan took out a bill of mortgage for £2,500. Queensland Country Women's Association Girls' Hostel is a heritage-listed detached house at 5 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from to . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The building was constructed about 1885 as a single-storey timber house for Thomas Towell and his second wife Sarah. When Towell died about 1904, the property passed to his widow Sarah. The next significant owner was Dr Edward Elmslie Brown who bought it in 1908. Within the next three years, Brown added a second storey. Brown used the enlarged building as a residence and consulting rooms and built a timber hospital "Oakdale" adjacent with its entry facing Milford Street. He later added a second hospital building and a matron's residence. Flour Mill is a heritage-listed former mill at 231 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by George Brockwell Gill and built from 1901 to 1902. It is also known as Bridal Mill, F.W. Johnson and Sons Motor Showroom, and Old Flour Mill. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The Flour Mill was built in 1901–1902 for the Ipswich Milling Company Ltd, one of a series of flour mills connected with Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly Francis Kates. The architect was G.B. Gill and the contractors were Worley and Whitehead. The son of a miller, Kates was born in Berlin and, after graduating from Berlin University, migrated to Queensland in 1858. The Bremer River is a river that is a tributary of the Brisbane River, located in the Scenic Rim Region, Scenic Rim and Brisbane regions of South East Queensland, Australia. The -long Bremer River drains several Scenic Rim valleys in south-east Queensland, including the Fassifern Valley, with its drainage basin, catchment area covering approximately .
