The 49th District of the Iowa Senate is located in eastern Iowa, and is currently composed of Clinton and Scott Counties. Current elected officials Chris Cournoyer is the senator currently representing the 49th District. The area of the 49th District contains two Iowa House of Representatives districts: *The 97th District (represented by Norlin Mommsen) *The 98th District (represented by Mary Wolfe) The district is also located in Iowa's 2nd congressional district, which is represented by Mariannette Miller-Meeks. Hubert Houser
Hubert M. Houser (born October 9, 1942) was the Iowa State Senator from the 49th District. He served in the Iowa Senate from 2002, when he filled a vacancy left by Derryl McLaren's resignation, until 2013 Houser served on several committees in the Iowa Senate - the Agriculture committee; the Local Government committee; the Transportation committee; the Ways and Means committee; and the Economic Growth committee, where he is the ranking member. He also serves on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee. Mark S. Shearer (born August 11, 1962) is an American politician who served as a member of both chambers of the Iowa General Assembly Early life and education Born in Burlington, Iowa, Shearer was raised in Washington, Iowa and attended the University of Iowa, majoring in journalism, business marketing and music performance. Career Mark was a broadcast journalist and on-air talent in several Iowa markets. Jack William Hester (June 22, 1929 – April 29, 1999) was an American farmer and politician who served as a member of the Iowa Senate from 1979 to 1993. Mariannette Miller-Meeks
Mariannette Jane Miller-Meeks (born September 6, 1955) is an American physician and politician serving as the U.S. representative from Iowa's 2nd congressional district since 2021. A member of the Republican Party, Miller-Meeks served as Iowa state senator for the 41st district from 2019 to 2021. Her district includes most of Iowa's southeastern quadrant, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Burlington, Iowa City, and Miller-Meeks's hometown of Ottumwa. Miller-Meeks ran three unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. House against Dave Loebsack. When Loebsack retired in 2020, she ran again and defeated Rita Hart by a margin of six votes. Mary Wolfe
Mary Lynn Wolfe (born 1963) is a former Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives from the 98th district. Personal life Wolfe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a JD from the University of Iowa. She has been an attorney in private practice with her father. Political career In 2010, Wolfe announced that she would run to represent District 26 in the Iowa House of Representatives, after the former representative, Polly Bukta, announced that she would not run for re-election. She defeated the Republican opponent, David A. Rose, by 424 votes. Following redistricting in 2011, Wolfe ran to represent District 98 in 2012 and won. She was re-elected to that seat four times. She did not seek reelection in 2022 and left office in January 2023.
