John The Iberian
John the Iberian ( ka, იოანე მთაწმინდელი; died ) was a Georgian monk, who is venerated as a saint. His name refers to his origins from the Kingdom of the Iberians. Life A member of a Georgian noble family from Tao-Klarjeti in southern Georgia, he was married and served as a military commander. After becoming tonsured as a monk early 960s at the lavra of the Four Churches in Tao-Klarjeti, he became a monk at Mount Olympus (now Uludağ) in Bithynia and then traveled to Constantinople to rescue his son, Euthymius the Illuminator (''Euthymius Opplyseren''). Euthymius had been held as a hostage by the emperor. John and his son attracted many followers, so they both retired to the monastery of Saint Athanasius on Mount Athos. Ioane ( ka, იოანე ბაგრატიონი) (16 May 1768 in Tbilisi, Georgia – 15 February 1830 in Saint Petersburg, Russia) was a Georgian prince (batonishvili), writer and encyclopaedist. Life A son of George XII, the last king of Kartl-Kakheti kingdom, eastern Georgia, by his first wife Ketevan Andronikashvili, Ioane commanded an avant-garde of a Georgian force annihilated by the Persian army at the Battle of Krtsanisi in 1795. Following the battle, the kingdom entered a period of economic crisis and political anarchy. To eradicate the results of a Persian attack and to overcome the retardation of the feudal society, Prince Ioane proposed on 10 May 1799, a project of reforms of administration, army and education. This project was, however, never materialized due to the weakness of George XII and a civil strife in the country. Ioane Petritsi ( ka, იოანე პეტრიწი) also referred as John Petritsi was a Georgian Neoplatonist philosopher of the 11th-12th century, active in the Byzantine Empire and Kingdom of Georgia, best known for his translations of Proclus, along with an extensive commentary. In later sources, he is also referred to as Ioane Chimchimeli ( ka, იოანე ჭიმჭიმელი). The ''Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy'' describes Petritsi as "the most significant Georgian medieval philosopher" and the "most widely read Georgian philosopher." Ioane Shavteli ( ka, იოანე შავთელი) was a Georgian poet of the late 12th and early 13th centuries credited to have written the encomiastic poem traditionally, and unsuitably, known as ''Abdulmesiani'' (აბდულმესიანი), i.e., "Slave of the Messiah" (from Arabic عبد المسيح, Abdul Masīh). A reference to Shavteli and his work is made in a postscript of Shota Rustaveli’s ''The Knight in the Panther's Skin'' (ვეფხისტყაოსანი), which is the source of the poem's incongruous title. Shavteli's ode is, in fact, a eulogy to the two greatest monarchs of medieval Georgia, David "the Builder" (r. 1089-1125) and the poet's contemporary Queen Tamar (r. 1184-1213). John Zosimus, also known as Ioane-Zosime ( ka, იოანე-ზოსიმე; died c. 990) was a 10th-century Georgian Christian monk, religious writer, and calligrapher. He is known for his liturgical compilations and for composing several hymns dedicated to the Georgian language. Biographical details on Ioane-Zosime are scarce beyond the fact that he was one of the numerous expatriate Georgian clerics active at the monastery of Mar Saba in Palestine. In the early 970s he moved to Mount Sinai, probably fleeing Arab rule. His voluminous body of work dates from between 949 and 987. Of the three surviving manuscripts of Ioane-Zosime's Mar-Saba period, two – hymn collections from 949 and 954 – are the most important. On Mt. Kete Ioane (30 October 1950 – 13 February 2015) was a Cook Islands politician. He was a Cook Islands Democratic Party Member of Parliament from 1999 to 2010 and served as a cabinet minister between 2006 and 2009. Biography Ioane was born in Amuri on the island of Aitutaki. He attended Amuri and Araura Primary school and Aitutaki Junior High School. He has a long career as a public servant, first in the Agriculture Department, later in the Police Department.
