Intigam Aliyev
Intiqam Kamil oglu Aliyev (sometimes also spelled Intigam) (born 30 November 1962, Pushkin (now Bilasuvar), Azerbaijan SSR) is a human rights defender and lawyer in Azerbaijan. Along with other human rights activists, Aliyev was jailed in mid-2014 as part of a country-wide crackdown. In April 2015 the court sentenced him to 7.5 years in jail. Aliyev's arrest is widely considered to have been politically motivated. Aliyev had previously brought a number of cases against Azerbaijani authorities to the European Court of Human Rights. Prior to his arrest, Aliyev ran the Legal Education Society (LES). On 22 April 2015, he was sentenced to seven and a half years’ imprisonment. He was found guilty of large-scale embezzlement and fraud, illegal business and tax evasion. He was considered a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. Bilasuvar District
Bilasuvar District ( az, Biləsuvar rayonu) is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the south-east of the country and belongs to the Shirvan-Salyan Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Imishli, Saatly, Sabirabad, Salyan, Neftchala, Jalilabad, and Ardabil Province of Iran. Its capital and largest city is Bilasuvar. As of 2020, the district had a population of 105,100. Etymology The district's name is derived from the city Bilasuvar. "Bile" is derived from the Turkish word “bilya” which means lowland, while "suvar" means a "cavalryman". According to Azerbaijani sources, 10 thousand cavalrymen were deployed in these lowlands during the reign of Sassanid shah Khosrov. Geography Total area of the district equals 1358 km2. Leyla Islam qizi Yunusova (née Vəliyeva; born 21 December 1955, in Baku), better known as Leyla Yunus, is an Azerbaijani human rights activist who serves as the director of Institute of Peace and Democracy, a human rights organisation. She is particularly known for her work helping citizens affected by forced evictions in Baku, on whose behalf she organized several small protests. In July 2014, the Azerbaijani authorities jailed Yunus under allegations of fraud and tax evasion, which are charges widely regarded as dubious. After being sentenced to 8.5 years in jail on 13 August 2015, Leyla Yunus was released on grounds of her deteriorating health on 9 December 2015, with a court converting her sentence into a suspended one.
