The Instituto Mexicano de la Radio (English: "Mexican Radio Institute") is a Mexican public broadcaster, akin to National Public Radio in the US. It is also known as IMER. History It was founded in 1983 as a companion to the public TV broadcaster Imevisión, since privatized and known as TV Azteca. When Imevisión was privatized, XEIMT-TV (Imevisión's cultural channel) and IMER remained under government control. XHEMIT-FM
XHEMIT-FM/XEMIT-AM is a combo radio station in Comitán, Chiapas, Mexico. Broadcasting on 107.9 FM and 540 AM, XHEMIT-FM/XEMIT-AM is owned by the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio and broadcasts a music and information format under the name "Radio IMER". History XEMIT-AM 540 came on air in 1988, one of three IMER stations that signed on under agreement with the Chiapas state government. In 1994, the station added a news program, "Línea 54", in response to the confusion generated by the EZLN situation in Chiapas. At the time, the station broadcast with 700 W of power when it was authorized for 5 kW; it reached its maximum authorization with a new antenna and tower in 1995, significantly expanding its coverage. In 2013, XHEMIT-FM 107.9 was signed on as part of the AM-FM migration campaign currently underway among Mexican radio stations. XHSCO-FM is a radio station in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. Broadcasting on 96.3 FM, XHSCO-FM is owned by the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio and broadcasts a news and music format under the name "Estéreo Istmo". XHSCO-FM broadcasts in HD. History In the early 1980s, PEMEX began exploring the idea of constructing a radio station in the Istmo region, home to many oil facilities, in order to connect the region and the petroleum industry. In 1982, the frequency of 96.3 MHz was assigned, and XHGAS-FM came to air on December 7, 1985 from a transmitter facility located atop a hill within the oil company's facilities. PEMEX programmed 96.3 FM with music for 10 hours a day, but it could not keep the station on air. Longer and longer periods of time off air endangered the station's permit, and in 1987, the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio began operating XHGAS-FM on PEMEX's behalf. Salina Cruz is a major seaport on the Pacific coast of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is the state's third-largest city and is the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. It is part of the Tehuantepec District in the west of the Istmo Region. XHLAC-FM is a radio station in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. Broadcasting on 99.7 FM, XHLAC-FM is owned by the Instituto Mexicano de la Radio and broadcasts a music and information format under the name "Radio Azul". History XELAC-AM 1560 signed on March 1, 1977 under the management of Sicartsa, a massive, then-state-owned iron and steel mill which brought many jobs to Lázaro Cárdenas, and with them the need for a radio station. Lázaro Cárdenas () is a port city in Michoacán bordered to the east by Guerrero. Lázaro Cárdenas is located in the southern part of the Mexican state of Michoacán.
