Inglis is a local urban district in the Rural Municipality of Riding Mountain West, Manitoba, Canada. Located on Provincial Road 366. approximately east of Highway 83 between Russell and Roblin, Inglis is the closest community to the Asessippi Provincial Park, Asessippi Ski Area, and the Lake of the Prairies. Inglis is also the home of the Inglis Grain Elevators, a National Historic Site of Canada. History Inglis was established as a village on 1 January 1956. On May 1, the Inglis and District Credit Union Society received their Charter of Incorporation. Inglis Elevator Row
The Inglis elevator row is a row of five wooden grain elevators located alongside the former Canadian Pacific Railway track bed, in the village of Inglis, Manitoba, Canada. Because so many traditional country elevators have been demolished throughout Western Canada, the Inglis elevator row preserves rare examples of a formerly common sight from "the golden age of grain". In recognition of the elevators in Inglis being the last elevator row in Canada, they have been fully restored and protected as a National Historic Site of Canada. History and significance The arrival of the railroad in the smaller communities of Manitoba offered both risk and reward for villages. When the railroad reached Inglis in 1922, allowing grain from the area to reach distant markets, the nearby town of Asessippi was quickly abandoned. The Shellmouth Reservoir (also known as Lake of the Prairies) is a man-made reservoir on the Assiniboine River in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. The Shellmouth Dam () is a multi-purpose embankment dam built by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA). The dam and reservoir are part of a strategy to reduce the risk of flood damage for Winnipeg and other communities along the Assiniboine River. For example, in the 1997 Red River flood, the inflow to the reservoir peaked at while the outflow never exceeded . The reservoir is also used to supplement flows on the Assiniboine when conditions are dry, ensuring water supply for Brandon, Portage la Prairie, irrigators, and some industries. Asessippi Ski Area
The Asessippi Ski Area is the largest ski resort in Manitoba. It is located on the Manitoba Escarpment and has a vertical drop of , the second largest in the province. It is approximately from Inglis, Manitoba, south of the town of Roblin, and north of the town of Russell. Asessippi Provincial Park
Asessippi Provincial Park is a provincial park in the Rural Municipality of Riding Mountain West, Manitoba, Canada. It is located near Inglis, Manitoba, about west of Dauphin, and is in size. A campground on the south shore of the Shellmouth Reservoir has serviced and un-serviced sites as well as a group-use area. Asessippi Ski Resort is also in the area. The park is considered to be a Class III protected area under the IUCN protected area management categories, and was designated a provincial park by the Government of Manitoba on 9 April 1964.
