Inglewood is a city in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 107,762. It was incorporated on February 14, 1908. The city is in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County, near Los Angeles International Airport. History The earliest residents of what is now Inglewood were Native Americans who used the Aguaje de Centinela natural springs in today's Edward Vincent Jr. Park (known for most of its history as Centinela Park). Local historian Gladys Waddingham wrote that these springs took the name Centinela from the hills that rose gradually around them, and which allowed ranchers to watch over their herds," (thus the name ''centinelas ''or sentinels). Inglewood is a town in the Taranaki Region of New Zealand's North Island. It is southeast of New Plymouth on New Zealand State Highway 3, State Highway 3, close to Mount Taranaki, and sits above sea level. The town services a mainly dairy farming region. History The settlement was founded in 1873 and was originally called Moatown. The name was then changed to Milton, before ultimately being renamed to Inglewood in 1875 to avoid confusion with Milton, New Zealand, Milton in the South Island. The railway reached Inglewood in 1877, connecting it with New Plymouth as part of the first extension of what is now the Marton–New Plymouth line. Inglewood is a township in Victoria, Australia, located on the Calder Highway in the Shire of Loddon. History Inglewood was an important gold mining centre during the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s and 1860s. Gold was first discovered in 1859 by Alexander, Joseph and Thomas Thompson and Joseph Hanny. On notification of the discovery some 16,000 diggers flocked to the area. By January 1860 a new field a few miles south of the original was opened up by Potter, Irvine and McKean and dubbed "New Inglewood". This is the site of the present township. By mid-1860 the population on the field was estimated to be greater than 40,000, ranking among the biggest rushes in Victoria's history. Inglewood is an urban neighbourhood in central Calgary, Alberta, Canada, centred on 9th Avenue SE for several blocks east of the Elbow River and downtown. Inglewood is a residential neighbourhood in north west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Between 1946 and 1996, Edmonton's Charles Camsell Hospital was located in the neighbourhood. The hospital was named after Canadian geologist, map maker and Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, Charles Camsell. Inglewood Children's Home was a children's home in Otley, West Yorkshire founded in 1899. History The home was originally built on Inglewood Drive in 1899 but in the mid 1980s was moved to Whitley Croft Garth in a cul-de-sac. The home originally housed up to 16 young people in the mid 1990s but over time the number reduced to 8 by 2011. Closure In May 2013 Children's Services decided that the home should be closed and open three smaller homes in its place. Inglewood is a small town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the Adelaide Hills Council local government area, and is adjacent to Houghton, Paracombe and the rural districts of Upper Hermitage and Chain of Ponds. At the 2006 census, Inglewood had a population of 264. Inglewood began as a private subdivision, and was named after a town in Cumberland, England. The historic Inglewood Inn on North East Road was built by Thomas Deacon in 1858, and played a significant role in the development of the area. It survives today and is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register and the former Register of the National Estate. Inglewood Post Office opened in July 1865. The town also has a general store, located on North East Road. The modern boundaries of Inglewood were established in October 2001 for the long established name. Inglewood Forest is a large tract of mainly arable and dairy farm land with a few small woodland areas between Carlisle and Penrith in the English non-metropolitan county of Cumbria or ancient county of Cumberland. Etymology ''Inglewood'' is first attested in the forms ''Englewod’'' (c. 1150), ''Engelwode'' (c. 1158) and ''Englewud'' (1227). The name means "Wood of the English or Angles". This seems to reflect a situation where, at the time of the name's formation, Cumbria was still predominantly a Celtic-speaking region, and sometimes part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, and English settlement or land-ownership was still unusual enough to be a distinctive feature in a place-name. Baron Inglewood, of Hutton in the Forest in the County of Cumberland, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 30 June 1964 for the Conservative politician William Fletcher-Vane. He was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. William Lyonel Vane, younger brother of Henry Vane, 9th Baron Barnard, who had succeeded to the barony of Barnard in 1891 on the death of his distant relative Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Cleveland and 8th Baron Barnard. William Lyonel Vane and his brother, the ninth Baron Barnard, were both great-great-grandsons of Hon. Morgan Vane, younger son of Gilbert Vane, 2nd Baron Barnard, whose eldest son, the third Baron, was created Earl of Darlington, and from whom the Dukes of Cleveland descended.
