Baron Inglewood
Baron Inglewood, of Hutton in the Forest in the County of Cumberland, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 30 June 1964 for the Conservative politician William Fletcher-Vane. He was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. William Lyonel Vane, younger brother of Henry Vane, 9th Baron Barnard, who had succeeded to the barony of Barnard in 1891 on the death of his distant relative Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Cleveland and 8th Baron Barnard. William Lyonel Vane and his brother, the ninth Baron Barnard, were both great-great-grandsons of Hon. Morgan Vane, younger son of Gilbert Vane, 2nd Baron Barnard, whose eldest son, the third Baron, was created Earl of Darlington, and from whom the Dukes of Cleveland descended. Vane-Tempest Baronets
The Vane, later Vane-Tempest Baronetcy, of Long Newton in the County of Durham, was a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. The Vane baronetcy was created on 13 July 1782 for Reverend Henry Vane, D.D., second son of George Vane of Long Newton.Cokayne, p. 224 He was a descendant of Sir Henry Vane the Elder. Vane married Frances Tempest, daughter of John Tempest of Sherburne, Durham. When her brother, John Tempest, died in 1771 naming the baronet's son as his heir, the younger Vane assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Tempest in accordance with his uncle's will. Thus, when the 1st baronet died in 1794, his son became Baronet Vane-Tempest. This second baronet represented both the city and county of Durham in Parliament and was a well-known sportsman. Viscount Vane was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1720 for the Honourable William Vane, who had previously represented County Durham in Parliament and who later sat for Steyning and Kent. He was created Baron Vane, of Dungannon in the County of Tyrone, also in the Peerage of Ireland, at the same time he was given the viscountcy. Baron Barnard, of Barnard Castle in the Bishopric of Durham, is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1698 for Christopher Vane, who had previously served as a member of parliament for County Durham and Boroughbridge (UK Parliament constituency), Boroughbridge. Vane was the son of Henry Vane the Younger, Sir Henry Vane the Younger and grandson of Henry Vane the Elder, Sir Henry Vane the Elder. (William) Richard Fletcher-Vane, 2nd Baron Inglewood (born 31 July 1951), usually called Richard Inglewood, is a former Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. Lord Inglewood is a non-affiliated member of the House of Lords, a barrister and a chartered surveyor. He was a Member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 2004, and a junior minister in the UK government from 1995 to 1997. Political career At the 1983 general election, he stood as the Conservative candidate in the safe Labour constituency of Houghton and Washington, where he finished third with 24% of the votes. House Of Lords Act 1999
The House of Lords Act 1999 (c. 34) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that reformed the House of Lords, one of the chambers of Parliament. The Act was given Royal Assent on 11 November 1999. For centuries, the House of Lords had included several hundred members who inherited their seats (hereditary peers); the Act removed such a right. However, as part of a compromise, the Act did permit ninety-two hereditary peers to remain in the House on an interim basis. Another ten were created life peers to enable them to remain in the House. The Act decreased the membership of the House from 1,330 in October 1999 to 669 in March 2000.
