Ingenuity (Crespi)
''Ingenuity'' (Italian: ''L'Ingegno'') is an allegorical Baroque painting by the Bolognese painter Giuseppe Maria Crespi. The painting is also known as ''Amor Victorious''. It is on display in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Strasbourg, France, to which it had been donated by the collectors Othon Kaufmann and François Schlageter. Its inventory number is 994-1-1, or 44.994.1.1. The painting, one of the long-lived Crespi's most monumental and expressive, was painted in the early years of his mature period, although a precise dating has proved impossible. Its texture may have been inspired by Rembrandt, its subject by Caravaggio's '' Triumphant Cupid'', although this winged young man with the helmet, the bow and arrow, and the armillary sphere behind him, also stands for the classical allegory of ingenuity (the faculty of finding clever solutions). Giuseppe Crespi
Giuseppe Maria Crespi (March 14, 1665 – July 16, 1747), nicknamed Lo Spagnuolo ("The Spaniard"), was an Italian late Baroque painter of the Bolognese School. His eclectic output includes religious paintings and portraits, but he is now most famous for his genre paintings. Giuseppe Crespi, together with Giambattista Pittoni, Giovan Battista Tiepolo, Giovan Battista Piazzetta, Canaletto and Francesco Guardi forms the traditional great Old Masters painters of that period. Biography Crespi was born in Bologna to Girolamo Crespi and Isabella Cospi. His mother was a distant relation of the noble Cospi family, which had ties to the Florentine House of Medici. He was nicknamed "the Spanish One" (Lo Spagnuolo) because of his habit of wearing tight clothes characteristic of Spanish fashion of the time. ''Amor Vincit Omnia'' ("Love Conquers All" in Latin, known in English by a variety of names including ''Amor Victorious'', ''Victorious Cupid'', ''Love Triumphant'', ''Love Victorious'', or ''Earthly Love'') is a painting by the Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio. ''Amor Vincit Omnia'' shows Amor, the Roman Cupid, wearing dark eagle wings, half-sitting on or climbing down from what appears to be a table. Sir Joshua Reynolds (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was an English painter, specialising in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century. He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. He was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, and was knighted by George III in 1769. Palazzo Magnani, Bologna
Palazzo Magnani is a Renaissance palace located on Via Zamboni number 20 in central Bologna, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy, built by the Magnani noble family with the same name. Construction on the palace began in 1577 under architect Domenico Tibaldi until his death in 1583. Floriano Ambrosini then took over the architectural duties. In 1797 the palace became a property of the Guidotti family. In the late 19th century they sold it to the Malvezzi Campeggi family whose coat of arms is still visible on the façade.
