Indigenous Language Institute
The Indigenous Language Institute (ILI) is a nonprofit organization that works to preserve and pass on language traditions within indigenous groups located in North America. The organization was founded in 1992 as the Preservation of Original Languages of the Americas (IPOLA), and it has since worked closely with various indigenous peoples, including Native Hawaiians, Alaska Natives, and indigenous citizens of both Canada and the United States. The organization seeks to create sustainable avenues for the teaching of indigenous languages, and to do so, they have created numerous forms of brochures, conducted on-site research, and catalogued many sources digitally for any indigenous group to access. Indigenous Language
An indigenous language, or autochthonous language, is a language that is native to a region and spoken by indigenous peoples. This language is from a linguistically distinct community that originated in the area. Indigenous languages are not necessarily national languages but they can be; for example, Aymara is an official language of Bolivia. Also, national languages are not necessarily indigenous to the country. Many indigenous peoples worldwide have stopped passing on their ancestral languages to the next generation and have instead adopted the majority language as part of their acculturation into the majority culture. Furthermore, many indigenous languages have been subject to linguicide (language killing).
