''Indersdorf'' is an oil on canvas painting by Franz Marc executed in 1904. It is in the collection of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. History The painting was made in 1904 at a time when Franz Marc stayed several times in Markt Indersdorf in the Dachau district. The previous year Marc had done a trip to France where he met the work of the impressionist painters for the first time. After his return he left his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was now searching for his own style with lighter and stronger colors. Description The upper half of the painting mainly shows Gasthaus zur Mühle in the village of Glonn, a district of Markt Indersdorf, and the neighboring buildings. In the foreground flows the river Glonn, over which a bridge crosses on the right edge of the picture. Elongated flower beds stretch between the inn and the river. Markt Indersdorf is a municipality in the district of Dachau in Bavaria in Germany. Geography Markt Indersdorf is located on the Glonn River. The Glonn divides the two main towns Markt Indersdorf and Kloster(monastery) Indersdorf. Markt Indersdorf is the largest town in the Dachau hinterland with a central location within the Dachau district. The closest villages are Langenpettenbach, Engelbrechtsmühle, Glonn, Karphofen, Strassbach, and Untermoosmühle. Other villages further out are Ainhofen, Eichstock, Langenpettenbach and Hirtlbach. History The area around Indersdorf has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Remains of Celtic/Vindelici structures near Arnzell (between Indersdorf and Altomünster) have been discovered. A Roman road that went from Salzburg to Augsburg passed through a forest south-east of Indersdorf. The road would later be used for oxen/cattle trading in the Middle Ages. Oil Painting
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. It has been the most common technique for artistic painting on wood panel or canvas for several centuries, spreading from Europe to the rest of the world. The advantages of oil for painting images include "greater flexibility, richer and denser colour, the use of layers, and a wider range from light to dark". But the process is slower, especially when one layer of paint needs to be allowed to dry before another is applied. The oldest known oil paintings were created by Buddhist artists in Afghanistan and date back to the 7th century AD. The technique of binding pigments in oil was later brought to Europe in the 15th century, about 900 years later. Franz Marc
Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of ''Der Blaue Reiter'' (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it. His mature works mostly depict animals, and are known for bright colouration. He was drafted to serve in the German Army at the beginning of World War I, and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, the Nazis named him a degenerate artist as part of their suppression of modern art. However, most of his work survived World War II, securing his legacy. His work is now exhibited in many eminent galleries and museums. When up for auction, his major paintings attract large sums, with a record of £42,654,500 for ''Die Füchse'' (''The Foxes''). Städtische Galerie Im Lenbachhaus
The Lenbachhaus () is a building housing an art museum in Munich's ''Kunstareal''. The building The Lenbachhaus was built as a Florentine-style villa for the painter Franz von Lenbach between 1887 and 1891 by Gabriel von Seidl and was expanded 1927–1929 by Hans Grässel and again 1969–1972 by Heinrich Volbehr and Rudolf Thönnessen. Some of the rooms have kept their original design. The city of Munich acquired the building in 1924 and opened a museum there in 1929. The latest wing was closed to the public in 2009 to allow the expansion and restoration of the Lenbachhaus by Norman Foster; the 1972 extension was demolished to make way for the new building. The museum reopened in May 2013. The architect placed the new main entrance on Museumsplatz in front of the Propylaea. The new facade, clad in metal tubes made of an alloy of copper and aluminum, will weather with time.
