The mountain toad (''Incilius cavifrons'') is a species of toad in the family Bufonidae. It is endemic to the Sierra de los Tuxtlas region in southern Veracruz state, Mexico. Its natural habitats are tropical pine-oak forests. It breeds in streams. This naturally rare species is threatened by habitat loss caused by agricultural activities, wood extraction, and infrastructure development. Toad
Toad is a common name for certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and large bumps covering the parotoid glands. Sierra De Los Tuxtlas
The Sierra de Los Tuxtlas (Tuxtlas Mountains) are a volcanic belt and mountain range along the southeastern Veracruz Gulf coast in Eastern Mexico. The Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Biósfera Los Tuxtlas) includes the coastal and higher elevations of the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas. The volcanic mountains were used as a basalt source by the Olmec culture during the Early Formative period (1500 BCE to about 400 BCE). Quarried basalt was transported by raft through a network of rivers, to sites in the Olmec heartland for use in creating monuments, including colossal heads. Geography Peaks in this range include Volcano Santa Marta and Volcano San Martín Tuxtla, both rising above 1,700 meters. ''Incilius'' is genus of toads in the true toad family, Bufonidae. They are sometimes known as the Central American toads or Middle American toads and are found in southern USA, Mexico, Central America, and northern Pacific South America (Colombia and Ecuador). They are an ecologically and biogeographically diverse group of toads, including micro-endemic species such as '' Incilius spiculatus'' that are restricted to undisturbed cloud forests, and widespread lowland species such as ''Incilius valliceps'' that predominantly occur in disturbed habitats.
