''In the Cool of the Day'' is a 1963 British-American romantic drama film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Metrocolor and Panavision. The film is directed by Robert Stevens and starring Peter Finch, Jane Fonda, Angela Lansbury, Arthur Hill, and Constance Cummings; with Nigel Davenport, and John Le Mesurier. Plot Christine Bonner (Fonda) is a beautiful young American woman with chronic health problems. She has been separated from her adoring but overly protective husband Sam (Hill), but agrees to return to him. She meets an English friend of Sam's, Murray Logan (Finch), who shares her great interest in Greece. Logan also is unhappily married because his wife, Sybil (Lansbury), blames him for an automobile accident that scarred her and killed their son. Robert Stevens (director)
Robert Stevens (December 2, 1920 – August 7, 1989) was an American director and producer of television shows and movies during a career of nearly 4 decades. He was most active throughout the 1950s and 1960s. His most famous and notable works include his works as the producer/director of ''Suspense (U.S. TV series), Suspense'', as a frequent director of ''Alfred Hitchcock Presents'' and ''The Alfred Hitchcock Hour'' and as the director of the movie ''Change of Mind''. He also directed the pilot of ''The Twilight Zone (1959 TV series), The Twilight Zone''. Work became slow for Stevens after the 1970s. His last work was as the director of an episode of ''Amazing Stories (1985 TV series), Amazing Stories'' in 1987. In 1989, Stevens was robbed and beaten in his rented Westport, Connecticut, Westport, Connecticut home where he had retired to in 1987. John Le Mesurier
John Le Mesurier (, born John Elton Le Mesurier Halliley; 5 April 191215 November 1983) was an English actor. He is perhaps best remembered for his comedic role as Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the BBC television situation comedy ''Dad's Army'' (1968–1977). A self-confessed "jobbing actor", Le Mesurier appeared in more than 120 films across a range of genres, normally in smaller supporting parts. Le Mesurier became interested in the stage as a young adult and enrolled at the Fay Compton Studio of Dramatic Art in 1933. From there he took a position in repertory theatre and made his stage debut in September 1934 at the Palladium Theatre in Edinburgh in the J. B. Priestley play ''Dangerous Corner''. He later accepted an offer to work with Alec Guinness in a John Gielgud production of ''Hamlet''. MGM-British was a subsidiary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer initially established (as MGM London Films Denham) at Denham Film Studios in 1936. It was in limbo during the Second World War; however, following the end of hostilities, a facility was acquired in Borehamwood (one of several known as Elstree Studios), which remained in use until it was closed in 1970.
