Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Tampico
The Immaculate Conception Cathedral (also Tampico Cathedral; es, Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción) is the main Catholic church in the Diocese of Tampico in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is located opposite the Plaza de Armas, in the historical center of the city. The erection of the Cathedral of Tampico was not carried out until 1841; the first stone was placed on May 9. The original project was undertaken by architect Lorenzo de la Hidalga, who was in charge of the work in 1850. In 1917, the building suffered the collapse of its central nave, and in 1922, the west tower collapsed after being struck by lightning. It was consecrated on November 12, 1931. It has three naves and a Latin cross plan. Tampico is a city and port in the southeastern part of the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is located on the north bank of the Pánuco River, about inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and directly north of the state of Veracruz. Tampico is the fifth-largest city in Tamaulipas, with a population of 314,418 in the city proper and 929,174 in the metropolitan area. Tamaulipas (), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Tamaulipas ( es, Estado Libre y Soberano de Tamaulipas), is a state in the northeast region of Mexico; one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 43 municipalities. Tamaulipas is bordered by the states of Nuevo León to the west, San Luis Potosà to the southwest, and Veracruz to the southeast. Lorenzo De La Hidalga
Lorenzo de la Hidalga (4 July 1810 – 1872) was a Spanish architect who spent most of his career in Mexico. Few of his buildings have survived, due to earthquakes, urban redevelopment, and other factors. Biography He was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 1810. While still rather young, he enrolled at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid; graduating in 1836 with a degree in architecture. He then spent some time in Paris, where he was inspired by the Neo-Classical ideals that were prevalent at the time, as well as the latest concepts concerning structural function, and the works of contemporary architects. Family circumstances took him to Mexico in 1838, where he married Ana GarcÃa Icazbalceta, elder sister of the noted historian JoaquÃn GarcÃa Icazbalceta.
