Imma Battaglia
Immacolata "Imma" Battaglia (born Portici, province of Naples, 28 March 1960) is an Italian left-wing politician and LGBT activist. Biography From the late 1980s to 2000 Imma Battaglia was a member of the Centre of Gay Culture "Mario Mieli" as well as its president for more than 5 years. As such she organised the first Gay Pride in Italy (Rome, 1994), and promoted Rome as a possible host for the 2000 World Gay Pride; her efforts were successful and the city was assigned the organisation of such event. The event created controversy in Italian politics because of the contemporaneity with the Great Jubilee of the Roman Catholic Church. Personal life An open lesbian. Battaglia is currently engaged to Eva Grimaldi. She was previously engaged to Italian actress Licia Nunez. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) movements are social movements that advocate for LGBT people in society. Some focus on equal rights, such as the ongoing movement for same-sex marriage, while others focus on liberation, as in the gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Earlier movements focused on self-help and self-acceptance, such as the homophile movement of the 1950s. Although there is not a primary or an overarching central organization that represents all LGBT people and their interests, numerous LGBT rights organizations are active worldwide. The earliest organizations to support LGBT rights were formed in the early 20th century. A commonly stated goal among these movements is social equality for LGBT people, but there is still denial of full LGBT rights. Left Ecology Freedom ( it, Sinistra Ecologia Libertà, SEL) was a democratic socialist political party in Italy whose bulk was formed by former members of the Communist Refoundation Party. The party's leader was Nichi Vendola, a former President of Apulia. On 17 December 2016, SEL dissolved into Italian Left, which was officially launched as a party in early 2017. Nicola "Nichi" Vendola (; born 26 August 1958) is an Italian left-wing politician and LGBT activist who was a Member of the Chamber of Deputies from Apulia from 1992 to 2005 and President of Apulia from 2005 to 2015. He is one of the first openly LGBT Italian politicians and the first openly LGBT heads of a regional government in Italy. Early life Born in Terlizzi, in the province of Bari, on 26 August 1958, Vendola was a member of the Italian Communist Youth Federation from the age of fourteen. He went on to study literature at his university, presenting a dissertation on the poet and film director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Vendola became a journalist for ''l'Unità.'' Portici
Portici (; ) is a town and ''comune'' of the Metropolitan City of Naples in Italy. It is the site of the Portici Royal Palace. Geography Portici lies at the foot of Mount Vesuvius on the Bay of Naples, about southeast of Naples itself. There is a small port. To the south east is Ercolano, formerly Resina, which occupies the site of ancient Herculaneum. San Giorgio a Cremano is another town nearby. History The city was completely destroyed by the Eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, but was rebuilt.
