''Ilaignan'' (; ) is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language historical action film directed by Suresh Krissna, who directs his 50th film, and written by DMK Chief and the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, his 75th film and based on the 1906 Russian novel, '' The Mother'', by Maxim Gorky. Plot Karky (Pa. Vijay) is the son of Arokkyasami (Nassar), who wants to win freedom of his people from the shipbuilding owner Rajanayagam ( Suman) and his wife Sena (Namitha). Meera (Meera Jasmine) is Rajanayagam's sister. She is a very kindhearted woman who helps Karky. With Meera's help, Karky starts a war against Rajanayagam. Rajayanagam is not only cruel and stone-hearted, but also very cunning and a big fraud. He and his wife play a cunning game and cheat Karky. Suresh Krissna (born 25 June 1959) is an Indian film director who has directed Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi Language films. His first independent film as a director was '' Sathya'' (1988), with Kamal Haasan. He is well known for having directed Rajinikanth in four films which include, '' Annamalai'' (1992), '' Veera'' (1994), ''Baashha'' (1995) and '' Baba'' (2002). ''Mother'' (russian: Мать, Mat') is a novel written by Maxim Gorky in 1906 about revolutionary factory workers. It was first published, in English, in ''Appleton's Magazine'' in 1906, then in Russian in 1907. Although Gorky was highly critical of the novel, the work was translated into many languages, and was made into a number of films.
