Igiaba Scego
Igiaba Scego (born 20 March 1974 in Rome) is an Italian writer, journalist, and activist of Somali origin. Biography Igiaba Scego was born in Rome, Italy, in 1974, after her parents were forced to flee Somalia following the 1969 coup d'état of Siad Barre; Scego's father was a prominent Somali politician. She graduated in Foreign Literature at La Sapienza University of Rome and obtained a PhD in pedagogy at Roma Tre University. Presently, she is writing about and researching cultural dialogue and migration. Works She writes for various magazines dealing with migrant literature and African literature, such as ''Latinoamerica'', ''Carta'', ''El Ghibli'' and ''Migra''. Her works include autobiographical references, and they depict the delicate balance between her two cultural realities, the Italian and Somali. Festivaletteratura
Festivaletteratura is a literary festival, held in Mantua, Italy, since 1997. Its peculiar formula is to host five days of small-sized lectures by authors from all over the world. The event is run mostly by volunteers, numbering around 700 in total. The lectures are hosted in historical places and squares, and during the five days of the fair there are about two hundred events. The low-profile style has in time attracted many big names of literature, along with Nobel Prize winners. The attendance to the events roughly matches the population of the city, so it is necessary to book tickets well in advance. In 2007, the fair celebrated its tenth edition. The 2005 fair was the set for the 2005 Tinto Brass movie ''Monamour'', in which it was depicted the peculiarity of the exhibit. The 2011 edition had seen for the first time the public exposition of the Lovers of Valdaro. Ingy Mubiayi
Ingy Mubiayi (born 27 June 1972) is an Egyptian-born Italian writer. She focuses her works on migrants and has become a voice of the Italian-African diaspora. In 2004, she was the recipient of the Eks & Tra prize for migrant writers for her work "Documenti, prego". In addition to her writing, Mubiayi teaches Italian and Arabic and has worked as a translator. Biography Ingy Mubiayi Kakese was born on 27 June 1973 to a Congolese father and Egyptian mother in Cairo, Egypt, where she lived until she was four years old. Moving to Rome, Italy, in 1977, she first attended a French school as her spoken languages were French and Arabic. When her sister was confused by the multi-lingual household, her parents imposed a rule of only speaking Italian and she lost her earlier two languages. Sarah Parker Remond (June 6, 1826 – December 13, 1894) was an American lecturer, activist and abolitionist campaigner. Born a free woman in the state of Massachusetts, she became an international activist for human rights and women's suffrage. Remond made her first public speech against the institution of slavery when she was 16 years old, and delivered abolitionist speeches throughout the northeastern United States. One of her brothers, Charles Lenox Remond, became known as an orator and they occasionally toured together for their abolitionist lectures. Eventually becoming an agent of the American Anti-Slavery Society, in 1858 Remond chose to travel to Britain to gather support for the growing abolitionist cause in the United States. Mary Edmonia Lewis, also known as "Wildfire" (c. July 4, 1844 – September 17, 1907), was an American sculptor, of mixed African-American and Native American ( Mississauga Ojibwe) heritage. Born free in Upstate New York, she worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first African-American and Native American sculptor to achieve national and then international prominence. She began to gain prominence in the United States during the Civil War; at the end of the 19th century, she remained the only Black woman artist who had participated in and been recognized to any extent by the American artistic mainstream. In 2002, the scholar Molefi Kete Asante named Edmonia Lewis on his list of ''100 Greatest African Americans''.
