Ibrahim Malam Dicko
Boureima Dicko (1970 – 2 May 2017), nom de guerre Ibrahim Malam Dicko, was a Burkinabe jihadist and the founder of Ansarul Islam. Biography Early life Dicko was born in 1970 to a Fulani family from the commune of Soboulé, Soum Province, Upper Volta. He went to a regular school before entering a Quranic school in Burkina Faso, later studying abroad. He married the daughter of a prominent imam in Djibo. Dicko began preaching in villages across Soum in 2009 and local radio stations. Gaining popularity, he founded an Islamic association named Al-Irchad and then founded a Quranic school in 2012. Dicko's earlier speeches did not preach extreme jihadism, instead advocating for equality between the Fulani and the Rimaïbé, the descendants of formerly-enslaved populations who later assimilated into the Fulani. Djaffar Dicko
Amadou Boucary, nom de guerre Djaffar Dicko and Yéro, is a Burkinabe jihadist who has served as the leader of Ansarul Islam since 2017. Biography Dicko was born as Amadou Boucary or Abdoul Salam Dicko in 1972 or 1980 in either Soboule or Pétéga, Burkina Faso and is the younger brother of Ansarul Islam founder Ibrahim Malam Dicko. He attended a Koranic school, and is reportedly very technology-savvy, and is addicted to online jihadist organizations and social media platforms. Dicko also had two wives and five children as of 2017. Dicko's first roles in Ansarul Islam was as the third-in-command of the group, carrying out executions. He was also close with Katiba Macina founder Amadou Koufa, and maintained ideological and operational links with Koufa. These contacts with Koufa led Dicko and his older brother to pledge allegiance to Al-Qaeda. Marabout
A marabout ( ar, مُرابِط, murābiṭ, lit=one who is attached/garrisoned) is a Muslim religious leader and teacher who historically had the function of a chaplain serving as a part of an Islamic army, notably in North Africa and the Sahara, in West Africa, and (historically) in the Maghreb. The marabout is often a scholar of the Qur'an, or religious teacher. Others may be wandering holy men who survive on alms, Sufi Murshids ("Guides"), or leaders of religious communities. Amadou Koufa
The Macina Liberation Front (MLF, , also known as the Macina Liberation Movement or Katibat Macina) is a militant Islamist group that operates in Mali. It is an affiliate of Ansar Dine. Tessalit
Tessalit is a rural commune and village in the Kidal Region of Mali. The village is the administrative centre of Tessalit Cercle (district). The village lies north of Adjelhoc and about from the Algerian border. The ''commune'' extends over an area of that is almost entirely desert. In the 2009 census the ''commune'' had a population of 5,739. It is served by Tessalit Airport. Tessalit is an oasis in the Sahara desert and a stop for trans-Saharan travellers. A gypsum deposit and a plaster factory also contribute to the local economy, though these activities have been disrupted in recent decades by the Tuareg Rebellions and terrorism in neighboring Algeria.
