Ian Russell (Folklorist)
Ian Russell MBE (born 1947) is a British Folklorist, most noted for his research into singing traditions in the English Pennines. Research Beginning in 1969, Russell has conducted extensive fieldwork in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, particularly on regional folksong and traditional drama. Whilst working as a teacher, Russell undertook a part-time PhD through the Institute of Dialect and Folklife Studies, at the University of Leeds. His thesis was titled 'Traditional singing in west Sheffield, 1970-2' and was completed in 1977. Russell has made a particular study of village carolling in the Pennines. The emergence of carol singing in this part of England has been dated to the eighteenth century and consists of a style and repertoire very different to the conception of carols which emerged in the Victorian period. Pennines
The Pennines (), also known as the Pennine Chain or Pennine Hills, are a range of uplands running between three regions of Northern England: North West England on the west, North East England and Yorkshire and the Humber on the east. Commonly described as the "backbone of England", the range stretches northwards from the Peak District at the southern end, through the South Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines to the Tyne Gap, which separates the range from the Border Moors and Cheviot Hills across the Anglo-Scottish border, although some definitions include them. British Library Sound Archive
The British Library Sound Archive, formerly the British Institute of Recorded Sound; also known as the National Sound Archive (NSA), in London, England is among the largest collections of recorded sound in the world, including music, spoken word and ambient recordings. It holds more than six million recordings, including over a million discs and 200,000 tapes. These include commercial record releases (chiefly from the UK), radio broadcasts (many from the BBC Sound Archive), and privately made recordings. The Folklore Society (FLS) is a national association in the United Kingdom for the study of folklore.
