Ian Robinson (Australian Football Umpire)
Ian Robinson (born 20 August 1946) is a former Australian rules football field umpire who officiated in the Victorian Football League (VFL). At the time of his retirement from umpiring in 1987, Robinson held the VFL/AFL record for most senior games officiated as a field umpire (353), of which nine were VFL Grand Finals, second only to Jack Elder. Throughout his career, and later as an umpiring coach and administrator, Robinson was a first-hand witness to some of Australian rules football's most memorable on-field incidents in one of the most tumultuous periods of the sport's history, and his achievements have been recognized with induction in both the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the AFL Umpires Association Hall of Fame. 1971 VFL Season
The 1971 VFL season was the 75th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 3 April until 25 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Hawthorn Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by seven points in the 1971 VFL Grand Final. Hawthorn full-forward Peter Hudson kicked 150 goals for the season, equalling the all-time record set by Bob Pratt () in 1934. Wayne Johnston (footballer)
Wayne "The Dominator" Johnston (born 19 December 1957) is a former Australian rules footballer. Johnston played 209 games and kicked 283 goals for the Carlton Football Club (''the Blues''), in a career spanning 1979–1990. He was inducted into the Carlton Football Club Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2018, Johnston was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Playing career After playing junior football in Wandin, Johnston attracted the attention of Victorian Football Association recruiters; in 1975, after being rejected by Oakleigh because it already had a number of rovers on its playing list, he signed to play for Prahran. Johnston played for Prahran from 1975 until 1978, and was part of their 1978 premiership winning team. Rowan Sawers
Rowan Sawers (born 19 October 1954) is a former Australian rules football field umpire and umpire coach in the Australian Football League (AFL). Over a career that spanned 21 seasons at the highest level, Sawers became the first field umpire to reach the 400-game milestone at senior VFL/AFL level, eventually retiring after 410 games, which included four VFL/AFL Grand finals and 31 other finals. In addition, he umpired eight State-of-Origin games and was involved in two International Rules tours to Ireland. Sawers was recruited from the Southern Umpires' Association in Seaford, Victoria. He began umpiring in the Victorian Football Association in 1975, and began his Victorian Football League career in 1977. Ross Dunne
Ross 'Twiggy' Dunne (born 25 February 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). He became famous for kicking the goal in the dying minutes of the 1977 VFL Grand Final to draw the game. Nicknamed after the famous British Twiggy, model due to his slim frame, Dunne was a versatile, no-fuss player who spent much of his career at centre half-forward. Dunne made his senior VFL debut in the final round of the 1967 VFL season against at Moorabbin Oval, lining up on champion full back Bob Murray (Australian footballer), Bob Murray. Ken Montgomery
Ken Montgomery (born 5 January 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for North Melbourne in the VFL. A reliable half back flanker, with an unusual kicking style, Montgomery was a winning premiership player with North Melbourne in 1977, having missed out on their finals matches for the previous two years. He won the 1972 Syd Barker Medal for the club's best and fairest player and also represented Victoria in 1978. Montgomery's father, grandfather and cousin also represented the North Melbourne Football Club. Ken Montgomery was one of the youngest players to play a senior game with North Melbourne, when in 1968 he played when he was 16 years old. Ray Shaw (Australian Footballer)
Ray Shaw (born 27 April 1954) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL). His younger brothers Tony and Neville as well as his two sons Heath and Rhyce also played for Collingwood. Shaw began his senior career at Preston in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), where he won a J. J. Liston Trophy in 1973 for the Best and Fairest player in the VFA first division. A Collingwood Best and Fairest Award winner, Shaw captained Collingwood to the 1979 Escort Cup Grand Final, where they defeated Hawthorn Football Club to win their first senior title since 1958. After a fallout with Collingwood officialdom in 1981, Shaw returned to Preston as captain-coach and led them to the 1983 and 1984 premierships. Waverley Park
Waverley Park (also and originally called VFL Park) was an Australian rules football stadium in Mulgrave, Victoria, Australia. For most of its history, its purpose was as a neutral venue and used by all Victorian-based Victorian Football League/Australian Football League clubs. However, during the 1990s it became the home ground of both the Hawthorn and St Kilda football clubs. It ceased to be used for AFL games from the 2000 season following the opening of Docklands Stadium. It is currently used as a training venue by Hawthorn.
