Ian Anderson (Manx Politician)
Robert John Gurney Anderson (16 June 1925 – 11 January 2005), known as Ian Anderson, was a President of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. Mr Anderson was born in Glencross, Rathmullan, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1925. He left school at the age of 13 and joined the Belfast Technical College before moving to the Isle of Man in 1946. In 1963 Ian was elected as a member of Patrick commissioners and remained as such until being elected as member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba. In 1982 he was elevated to the Legislative Council and remained a member until retiring from Tynwald in 1993. In 1988 he was elected as the, second ever non-Governor, President of the Legislative Council. He served until 1990 when the constitution was altered and Sir Charles Kerruish became ex officio President. Ian Anderson also held many Ministerial-level appointments during his career. President Of The Legislative Council (Isle Of Man)
The President of the Legislative Council (''Eaghtyrane y Choonceil Slattyssagh'') is the principal officer of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. Until 1980, the Lieutenant Governor presided ''ex officio''. From 1980 to 1990, the members elected a president from among their number. Since 1990, the President of Tynwald has been elected by the members of Tynwald from among their number and sits ''ex officio'' as the President of the Legislative Council. The president of the council, as the presiding officer, remains impartial. but has casting vote; that is, in the case of a tied vote, the president breaks the tie. The president is also responsible for controlling the procedure of the council and for the authoritative interpretation of its standing orders, and has the duty of nominating the member of the council to be responsible for promoting each Bill which is to come before council. David Anderson (Manx Politician)
David Moore Anderson MHK (born 6 February 1954) is a former Member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba. He also served in a number of ministerial posts on the Isle of Man and is therefore a former member of the Council of Ministers. Political career Anderson was elected as a Member of the House of Keys in 2001 for Glenfaba. He was re-elected in 2006 and 2011. He had previously served as a Commissioner for the parish of Patrick from 1992 until his election to the House of Keys. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 2015, for what was intended to be a five-year term, but he announced his early retirement in 2018. He was called to resign by protesters following his support of legislation which would have prohibited the advocacy of homosexuality in schools. Executive Council Of The Isle Of Man
The Executive Council is the former title of the Council of Ministers of the Isle of Man, Council of Ministers, the principal executive body of the Isle of Man Government. Its chairman was the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, Lieutenant Governor until 1980, when he was replaced by a Chairman of the Executive Council, Chairman elected by Tynwald. The Chairman was renamed ''Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, Chief Minister'' in 1986, and the council was renamed ''Council of Ministers of the Isle of Man, Council of Ministers'' in 1990. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. Sir Henry Charles Kerruish Order of the British Empire, OBE Doctor of Laws, LLD Captain of the Parish, CP Legislative Council (Isle of Man), MLC (23 July 1917 – 2 August 2003) was a Manx people, Manx politician who was the first President of Tynwald and, as Speaker of the House of Keys from 1962 to 1990, was the longest-serving Speaker in any Parliament in the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth. He was also the first Chairman of the Executive Council, the forerunner of the present Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, from 1961 to 1967. This made him the first Manx person to fulfil an executive role on the Isle of Man. Previously the Lieutenant Governor had exercised all executive power.
