INS Karanj (S23)
INS ''Karanj'' (S23) is the third submarine of the first batch of six s for the Indian Navy. It is a diesel-electric attack submarine based on the , designed by French naval defence and energy group DCNS and manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited, an Indian shipyard in Mumbai. The submarine was launched on 31 January 2018, delivered to Indian Navy on 15 February 2021, commissioned on 10 March 2021 in Mumbai in presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat. The submarine inherits its name from INS ''Karanj'' (S21) which served in the Navy from 1969–2003, and was named after Karanja island, also known as Uran island, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It also builds tankers, cargo bulk carriers, passenger ships and ferries. MDL is a public sector undertaking managed by the Ministry of Defence, with the Government of India holding an 84.83% stake. Raigad district (Marathi pronunciation: Help:IPA/Marathi, [ɾaːjɡəɖ]), previously Colaba fort, Colaba district, is a district in the Konkan division of Maharashtra, India. The district was renamed to Raigad fort, Raigad after the fort that was the first capital of the former Maratha Empire, which in turn was renamed from its earlier name - Rairi. Admiral Vijai Singh Shekhawat, PVSM, AVSM, VrC, ADC is a former Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. He was 15th Chief of Naval Staff and served as Navy Chief from September-30 1993 to September-30 1996. Admiral Shekhawat is a Patron of the General K.S. Thimayya Memorial Trust. Early life and education Shekhawat attended the St. Joseph's Academy and Colonel Brown Cambridge School in Dehradun, Bishop Cotton Boys' School in Bangalore, and St Joseph's College in Darjeeling. He later attended the National Defence Academy in Maharashtra and the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.
