IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award
The IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award is a technical field award given to an individual by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), for major contributions to standardization within the field of electrical and electronics engineering. This IEEE-level award, which honors Charles Proteus Steinmetz, was created in 1979 by the board of directors of the IEEE and sponsored by the IEEE Standards Association. The award is given only to individual recipients (not groups or multiple individuals in a single year). Recipients of this award receive a bronze medal, a certificate, and an honorarium. Charles Proteus Steinmetz
Charles Proteus Steinmetz (born Karl August Rudolph Steinmetz, April 9, 1865 – October 26, 1923) was a German-born American mathematician and electrical engineer and professor at Union College. He fostered the development of alternating current that made possible the expansion of the electric power industry in the United States, formulating mathematical theories for engineers. He made ground-breaking discoveries in the understanding of hysteresis that enabled engineers to design better electromagnetic apparatus equipment, especially electric motors for use in industry. At the time of his death, Steinmetz held over 200 patents. A genius in both mathematics and electronics, he did work that earned him the nicknames "Forger of Thunderbolts" and "The Wizard of Schenectady". Solveig Ward
Solveig Ward (1954) is an electrical engineer from Quanta Technology in Raleigh, North Carolina. Ward is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, where she was born on August 22, 1954; she grew up nearby, in Vällingby. As a student at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, she was interested in nuclear engineering, but instead studied electrical engineering; after the first semester of studies, she was the only woman in her class. After finishing her master's degree in 1978, she began her career as an engineer in training at ASEA. Awards and honors Ward received the PSRC Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Power System Relaying and Control Committee in 2013. Roy Billinton
Roy Billinton (born September 14, 1935) is a Canadian scholar and a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 2008, Billinton won the IEEE Canada Electric Power Medal for his research and application of reliability concepts in electric power system. In 2007, Billinton was elected a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Engineering for "contributions to teaching, research and application of reliability engineering in electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems." Hiroshi Yasuda (born 1944) is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokyo and works as a Consultant for Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. Donald Heirman
Donald Nestor Heirman (August 16, 1940October 30, 2020) was an American electrical engineer, U.S. Navy Commander, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) expert, and IEEE Life Fellow. He was a major contributor to international EMC standardization, serving as president of the IEEE Standards Association, and chair of the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR).
