Hyskenstræde is a street in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs from the pedestrian street Strøget (Vimmelskaftet) in the northwest to Kompagnistræde in the southeast from where it continues as Naboløs for another block to Gammel Strand. History The name is derived from the German word ''Häuschen'', meaning "Small Houses", a reference to the public toilets that were located on piles in the water at the far end of the street. One of the two public toilets, Østre Mag (Eastern "Mag", mag being another word for public toilet, cf. Magstræde).), was located in front of the street. In c. 1600, the street became known as Lasse Winders Stræde after city councilor Lars "Vinner" Nielsen. In the beginning of the 16th century, after the public toilet had been removed, the street once again became known as Hyskenstræde. Naboløs
Naboløs (literally "Without Neighbours") is a short street in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark. All six properties in the street date from the rebuilding of the city in the years after the Copenhagen Fire of 1795 and have been added to the Danish registry of protected buildings and places. Together with Hyskenstræde it provides a direct link between the shopping street Strøget and the metro station at Gammel Strand. History In the Middle Ages the street was considered part of Hyskenstræde. In the 16th century it became known under various names. In 1551 it is thus referred to as "that street where Niels Tommesen lives" (""thet strede som Niels Tommesen wdi boer") and in 1604 as Vejerhusstræde (Weighhouse Street) after the weigh house (vejerboden) which had been built at Gammel Strand in 1581. Strædet
Strædet (literally 'The Alley') is the colloquial name of a popular shopping and café street in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark, linking Højbro Plads on Strøget at its eastern end with Regnbuepladsen next to City Hall to the west. The official street names are Læderstræde (until Hyskenstræde), Kompagnistræde (until Gåsestræde) and Farvergade. The shops along the street are generally smaller and more eclectic than the flagship stores on neighbouring Strøget. It is dominated by art galleries and antique shops. Magstræde
Snaregade and Magstræde are two of the oldest streets in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark, linking Gammel Strand at their eastern end with Rådhusstræde to the west. Snaregade extends from the small square at the Gammel Strand metro station to Knabrostræde where it turns into Magstræde. The streets are among the few streets in the Old Town of Copenhagen which still feature their original cobbling. Strøget () is a pedestrian, car free shopping area in Copenhagen, Denmark. This popular tourist attraction in the centre of town is one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe at 1.1 km. Gammel Strand
Gammel Strand (modern Danish for "old beach"; originally meant "the old shoreline", i.e. prior to land reclamations) is a street and public square in central Copenhagen, Denmark. On the south side it borders on the narrow Slotsholmens Canal while the north side is lined by a row of brightly coloured houses from the 18th and 19th century. Across the canal, Thorvaldsens Museum and Christiansborg Palace are seen on the island Slotsholmen. The art gallery Kunstforeningen and the Ministry of Culture are the most notable institutions facing the street. History Copenhagen's cradle Gammel Strand used to be the site of a natural harbour, sheltered by a few small islets later to develop into Slotsholmen. Hans Christian Lumbye
Hans Christian Lumbye (; 2 May 1810 – 20 March 1874) was a Danish composer of waltzes, polkas, mazurkas and galops, among other things. Beginnings As a child, he studied music in Randers and Odense, and by age 14 he was playing the trumpet in a military band. In 1829, he joined the Horse Guards in Copenhagen, still continuing his music education. In 1839, he heard a Viennese orchestra play music by Johann Strauss I, after which he composed in the style of Strauss, eventually earning the nickname "The Strauss of the North". Career From 1843 to 1872, he served as the music director and in-house composer for Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen. Such was his popularity in the Danish capital that many Danes revered him and considered Johann Strauss II as the "Lumbye of the South".
