Huron—Bruce (provincial Electoral District)
Huron—Bruce (formerly known as Huron and Huron—Middlesex) is a provincial riding in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1987. It was known as Huron from 1987 to 1999. On March 22, 1940, the Liberal member, Charles Robertson, died while in office. Premier Mitchell Hepburn (and later, Daniel Conant) refused to call a by-election for three years citing wartime considerations. He said the electorate was "sick and tired of elections." CCF leader Ted Jolliffe opposed Hepburn's choice and took the government to court over the delayed by-election. The Ontario Court of Appeal sided with the government on the issue. Jolliffe said that he would appeal the decision to the Supreme Court but no further action was taken before the 1943 election was called. Huron County, Ontario
Huron County is a county of the province of Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeast shore of its namesake, Lake Huron, in the southwest part of the province. The county seat is Goderich, also the county's largest community. The population reported in the 2021 Census for this predominantly agricultural area with many villages and small towns was 61,366 in a land area of 3,399 square kilometres. Thomas Gibson (Canadian Politician)
Thomas Gibson (8 January 1825 – 1901) was an Ontario political figure. He represented Huron North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1871 to 1874 and Huron East from 1875 to 1898. He was a Liberal. Life He was born in Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland in Jan 1825, the son of Thomas Gibson (1751–1820) and his wife Helen Lunham. He was educated at the free church school in Greenlaw. He came to Canada West in 1854. He served as reeve for Howick Township for 7 years. He ran unsuccessfully in Huron North in 1867. The township of Gibson, now part of the Township of Georgian Bay in the Muskoka District, was named after him. He died in January 1901 and is buried in Wroxeter, Ontario with his wife Elizabeth (1830–1878). Huron East
Huron East was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1917. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created from parts of Huron Centre, Huron North and Huron South ridings. The East Riding of the county of Huron was initially defined to consist of the townships of Howick, Turnberry, Grey and Morris, the town of Wingham, and the villages of Brussels, Blyth and Wroxeter. In 1903, it was expanded to include the township of Wawanosh East. The electoral district was abolished in 1914 when it was merged into Huron North riding. Huron West was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1917. It was located in the province of Ontario. This riding was created from parts of Huron Centre, Huron North and Huron South ridings. The West Riding of the county of Huron was initially defined to consist of the townships of East Wawanosh, West Wawanosh, Ashfield, Colborne and Goderich, and the towns of Goderich and Clinton. In 1903, it was redefined to include the township of Hullett, and exclude the township of East Wawanosh. Armstrong Musgrove
Armstrong H. Musgrove (March 26, 1854 – March 28, 1940) was an educator and political figure in Ontario. He represented Huron North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1908 to 1918 as a Conservative member. He was born in Pickering township, the son of John Musgrove and Mary A. Armstrong, both natives of Ireland. In 1881, Musgrove married Margaret Simpson. He was a school teacher and principal. Musgrove was defeated when he ran for the Huron East seat in the Ontario assembly in 1890. His brother George also served in the assembly. He died at Wingham, Ontario Wingham (2016 census population 2,934) is a community located in the municipality of North Huron, Ontario, Canada, which is located in Huron County. John W. Joynt (January 3, 1899 – March 16, 1975) was an American Democratic politician who served in the Missouri General Assembly. He served in the Missouri Senate between 1955 and 1959.
