Houston Astros Radio Network
The Houston Astros Radio Network is an American broadcast network of radio affiliates in operation since 1962 that broadcast coverage of the Houston Astros before, during, and after that team's games. Radio content is broadcast in both the English and Spanish languages. It consists of 26 stations (and 4 broadcast relay stations) that span across three states with its English flagship station as KBME and its Spanish flagship station as K231CE (an FM translator fed by an HD Radio signal of KODA), both in Houston. In addition to its affiliates, Houston Astros Radio Network content can be listened to on satellite radio via Sirius XM Radio and online using both MLB.tv and Sirius XM Internet Radio. Sports commentators for the network are Robert Ford and Steve Sparks in English and Francisco Romero and Alex Treviño in Spanish. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. This leaves the original analog signal intact, allowing enabled receivers to switch between digital and analog as required. In most FM implementations, from 96 to 128 kbps of capacity is available. High-fidelity audio requires only 48 kbps so there is ample capacity for additional channels, which HD Radio refers to as "multicasting". KASE-FM (100.7 MHz "KASE 101") is a commercial radio station licensed to Austin, Texas. It is owned by iHeartMedia and airs a country music radio format. It shares studios and offices with four sister stations in the Penn Field complex in the South Congress district (or "SoCo") of south central Austin within walking distance of St. Edward's University. The transmitter site is off Waymaker Way in Austin, amid towers for other FM and TV stations. KASE-FM broadcasts in the HD Radio format. KEYH (850 AM) is a commercial radio station in Houston, Texas, under Special Temporary Authority from the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast at 100 watts from a temporary longwire antenna, on a tower located in Northline, North Houston. KEYH airs a classic hits format as "Houston Radio Platinum." After the loss of its main transmitter site, due to the sale of the land the array sat upon, KEYH went silent from December 31, 2020 until December 27, 2021. Alejandro Treviño Castro (born August 26, 1957) is a Mexican former professional baseball catcher. He is the younger brother of former Major League Baseball outfielder Bobby Treviño. Steve Sparks (pitcher, Born 1965)
Steven William Sparks (born July 2, 1965) is a former knuckleball-throwing right-handed Major League Baseball pitcher, who graduated from Holland Hall School, then attended Sam Houston State University in 1987. In addition to the knuckler, Sparks threw an occasional slider and low-80s fastball. Professional career Milwaukee Brewers Sparks was drafted in the 5th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He learned to throw the knuckle ball in 1991. He bounced around in the Brewers minor league system until 1995, which was when the Brewers added him to the starting rotation to begin the season. Before the 1995 season, Sparks was infamously known for having ripped a phone book and dislocating his non throwing shoulder, having kept him from making the team in 1994. Robert Ford (sportscaster)
Robert Ford is an American sportscaster who is the lead voice of the Houston Astros, replacing Milo Hamilton and other announcers Dave Raymond and Brett Dolan. Biography Before moving up to the booth, Ford hosted the Astros' pregame and postgame radio shows. He performed the same role with the Kansas City Royals before coming to Houston. His other baseball play-by-play experiences came from the Binghamton Mets, Yakima Bears, and the Kalamazoo Kings. Outside of baseball, he called Binghamton Bearcats women's and select men's basketball. He also called select high school football and basketball games for WCDO.
