Hospital Del Salvador
The Hospital del Salvador is a hospital in central Santiago, Chile. The hospital is located in the commune of Providencia. History The hospital was founded on December 7, 1871, during the presidency of Federico Errázuriz Zañartu, in response to the high number of deaths caused by epidemics in Santiago. The foundation stone was laid on the site of the former Mercedarian convent on January 1, 1872. Construction was delayed by economic problems and by the War of the Pacific (1879–84). In 1888 a new hospital was designed by the architect Carlos Barroilhet, it was approved four years later. Part of the hospital facade was destroyed by the 1985 Chile earthquake, this was soon repaired. Also in 1985, the main facade, the chapel, the buildings, halls and the park within the building complex were declared as historical monuments. 1985 Algarrobo Earthquake
An earthquake measuring 8.0 struck Santiago Chile on 3 March 1985, and ended up killing 177 people and injuring about 2,575 others. This earthquake was being felt between the northern Antofagasta Region and the southern Los Lagos Region. It was felt with a maximum intensity of VIII on the Mercalli intensity scale. Damage and effects The quake left 177 people dead, 2,575 injured, 85,358 houses damaged or destroyed and about a million people homeless. Many landslides were registered too, pavement breaks with the destruction of the Pan-American Highway in several points, broken-down bridges and considerable damage in affected town's infrastructure, with a long interruption on basic services. Providencia (, Spanish: "providence") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region.
