Hong Kong Women's Sevens
The Hong Kong Women's Sevens held the first women's international rugby sevens tournament in 1997, and has since become an annual event. The 2020 edition marked the start of a new era for the Hong Kong Women's Sevens. For the first time, the tournament will be an official event in the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series. The 2020 and 2021 tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. History The Hong Kong Sevens included a women's tournament for the first time under chairwoman Maria Allen and at the urging of USA 7s coach, Emil Signes. Over the next decade the number of tournaments grew, with almost every region developing regular championships. 2020 Women's Rugby Sevens Final Olympic Qualification Tournament
The final qualification repechage tournament for women's rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 19–20 June 2021 at Stade Louis II in Monaco. The tournament was originally scheduled for a year earlier, but was postponed until 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Twelve women's teams were eligible to compete in the repechage tournament, as high placing teams from the six continental Olympic qualification events. Jamaica was a late withdrawal from the tournament due to travel difficulties presented by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced the number of teams competing to eleven. France and Russia were the two best teams in the repechage, each going through the tournament undefeated. France women's national rugby sevens team was champion of Europe in 2007 (European Women's Sevens Championship). They competed at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens, their qualification being determined by their placement in the 2016–17 World Rugby Women's Sevens Series. Natasha Shangwe Olson-Thorne (born 6 October 1992) is a Hong Kong rugby union player. She represented Hong Kong at the 2017 Women's Rugby World Cup in Ireland, Hong Kong's first World Cup appearance. Olson-Thorne created history when she scored Hong Kong's first World Cup try in their match against Wales. Biography Olson-Thorne began playing rugby at the age of 15 while attending Sha Tin College. Colleen Jenny Tjosvold (born 30 March 1989) is a Hong Kong rugby union and sevens player. She was named in Hong Kong's historic 2017 Rugby World Cup squad. It was their first appearance at a World Cup. Biography Tjosvold started playing rugby when she was 10.
