Hong Kong Human Rights Press Awards
The Hong Kong Human Rights Press Awards recognize coverage of issues included in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as related to Asia. Organization The awards were run by the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Hong Kong, Amnesty International Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Journalists Association. On April 25, 2022, the FCC announced the suspension of the awards citing fears of "unintentionally" violating the city's National Security Law, leading to the resignation of 8 members from the organization's Press Freedom Committee and public criticism. After the FCC announcement, US-based nonprofit The Campaign for Hong Kong's President Samuel Chu announced his organization would step in to honor the 2022 winners in a virtual ceremony on May 10, 2022. Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) is a free, non-profit news website based in Hong Kong. It was co-founded in 2015 by Tom Grundy, who believed that the territory's press freedom was in decline, to provide an alternative to the dominant English-language news source, the ''South China Morning Post'', and to cover the pro-democracy movement. John Kamm
John Kamm is an American businessman and human rights activist. He is the founder of The Dui Hua Foundation, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that promotes universal human rights in well-informed, mutually respectful dialogue with China. He is credited with having helped more than 400 political and religious prisoners in China. Since his first intervention on behalf of a Chinese prisoner in May 1990, Kamm has made more than 100 trips to China to engage the government in a dialogue on human rights issues, focusing on the treatment of prisoners and prison conditions. He has made 10 visits to Chinese prisons and has submitted requests for information on more than 1,000 prisoners. Samuel Chu Muk Man (; born 3 January 1978) is a Hong Kong-born American activist and community organizer. Chu is the founder and President of The Campaign for Hong Kong, a US-based nonpartisan organization whose mission is to advocate for American leadership and policies that advance human rights and democracy in Hong Kong.
