Hiteswar Saikia
Hiteswar Saikia (3 October 1936 – 22 April 1996) was the chief minister of Assam for two terms, first from 28 February 1983 to 23 December 1985 and then from 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996. Family and education Hiteswar Saikia was born on 3 October 1936 at Bogabagh Tea Estate to Haladhar Saikia (1896-1988) in a Ahom family. His sister Aimoni married Membor Gogoi who served as Member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Teok. From his childhood, Saikia was drawn to the non-cooperative movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi. To join the movement he gave up going to school. At that time, he was studying in Class IX only. His father influenced his career at almost all the turning points of his early life. It was his father who made him go to Lucknow for postgraduate studies where he earned an M.A. in History. First Tarun Gogoi Ministry
Tarun Gogoi constituted his first ministry and became the 13th Chief Minister of Assam on 17 May 2001. Following the 2001 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Gogoi became Chief Minister succeeding AGP chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. There were 12 cabinet ministers and 4 ministers of state in the ministry. Gogoi along with his cabinet was sworn in by governor Srinivas Kumar Sinha, succeeding Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as Chief Minister of Assam on 18 May 2001. The hour-long ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan at 14:00. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Bhubaneswar Kalita, who challenged Gogoi's claim to become Chief Minister in the wake of the election results, both did not attend the ceremony. Ahom People
The Ahom (Pron: ), or Tai-Ahom is an ethnic group from the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The members of this group are admixed descendants of the Tai people who reached the Brahmaputra valley of Assam in 1228 and the local indigenous people who joined them over the course of history. Sukaphaa, the leader of the Tai group and his 9000 followers established the Ahom kingdom (1228–1826 CE), which controlled much of the Brahmaputra Valley in modern Assam until 1826. The modern Ahom people and their culture are a syncretism of the original Tai and their culture and local Tibeto-Burman people and their cultures they absorbed in Assam. Membor Gogoi
Membor Gogoi (1 October 1937 - 16 December 2016) was an Indian National Congress politician from Assam. He was a 3 time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly for Teok from 2001 to 2016. He also contested for the Teok seat in 1991 and 1996 but lost to the current MLA for Teok, Renupoma Rajkhowa. He was the brother in law of Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia. Early life Gogoi was born on 1 October 1937 to the late Jhanuram Gogoi and the late Mehmala Gogoi. He had a B.E.E. Political career Prior to his joining Congress party in 1988 Gogoi was working as a superintending engineer in Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB). Kesab Chandra Gogoi
Kesab Chandra Gogoi (29 September 1925 – 5 August 1998) was an Indian politician who was the Chief Minister of the state of Assam for two months in 1982. For most of his political career, he was a member of Indian National Congress. He was a finance minister in the Assam state cabinet twice and a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Dibrugarh constituency. Gogoi was born into a family of Tai-Ahom. He was married to Shanti Gogoi in 1951. His wife was the daughter of Padma Kumari Gohain, one of the first female MLAs in Assam, as well as one of the first female state ministers in Assam. His wife was also the daughter of Jogesh Chandra Borgohain, who was an MLC in the 1930s. Syeda Anwara Taimur (24 November 1936 – 28 September 2020) was an Indian politician, who was the chief minister of the Indian state of Assam from 6 December 1980 to 30 June 1981.
