First Tarun Gogoi Ministry
Tarun Gogoi constituted his first ministry and became the 13th Chief Minister of Assam on 17 May 2001. Following the 2001 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Gogoi became Chief Minister succeeding AGP chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. There were 12 cabinet ministers and 4 ministers of state in the ministry. Gogoi along with his cabinet was sworn in by governor Srinivas Kumar Sinha, succeeding Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as Chief Minister of Assam on 18 May 2001. The hour-long ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan at 14:00. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Bhubaneswar Kalita, who challenged Gogoi's claim to become Chief Minister in the wake of the election results, both did not attend the ceremony. No BJP or AGP legislators attended the ceremony either. Among those who attended were Congress General Secretary in charge of Assam Kamal Nath, AICC member Jagdish Tytler and several congress MPs from Assam. Tarun Gogoi
Tarun Gogoi (11 October 1936 – 23 November 2020) was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and led the party to a record three consecutive electoral victories and was the longest serving chief minister of the state. During his tenure as the chief minister, he is credited with ending militant insurgency and mitigating violence in addition to improving the state's fiscal condition. He also served six terms as a Member of parliament, Lok Sabha and served as a Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Food and Ministry of Food Processing Industries. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour, in 2021. Dr. Hemoprova Saikia (born 21 February 1940) is an Indian politician who was the minister of handloom and textiles in the government of Assam from 2001 to 2006. Rameswar Dhanowar
Rameswar Dhanowar (14 July 1939 – 10 July 2017) was an Indian politician from the state of Assam. He was a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Indian National Congress for Digboi. He was made a minister in Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi’s cabinet. Early life and education Rameswar Dhanowar was born on 14 July 1939 to Jethua Dhanowar and Umee Dhanowar in Sibsagar. He received a B.A. from Guwahati University in 1964. Political career Dhanowar was the Indian National Congress candidate for the constituency of Digboi in the 1978 Assam Legislative Assembly Election. He obtained 10312 votes, 32.66% of the total vote. Ardhendu Kumar Dey
Ardhendu Kumar Dey (24 March 1938 – 27 July 2022) was an Indian politician and Minister of Irrigation and Soil Conservation in the Government of Assam. He was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Hojai constituency from 1991 till 2006 as a member of INC. He was re-elected as an MLA from Hojai from 2011 to 2016. In April 2021, he left the Indian National Congress. Personal life He was born on 24 March 1938 to Aswini Kumar Dey and Hemalata Dey. He was a resident of Hojai, Assam. Sarat Barkotoky (1 March 1935 – 30 October 2023) was an Indian politician from the state of Assam. He was a Member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Sonari and Education minister. He was also a Minister of State in the Hiteswar Saikia cabinet. Early life and education Barkotoky was born in Mathurapur, Sonari on 1 March 1935 to Chandra Barkotoky and Chandra Probha Barkotoky. He had a B.T. Examination in the year 1970 from Dibrugarh University. He also had a B.A. Political career Barkotoky was the Indian National Congress candidate for the constituency of Sonari in the 1991 Assam Legislative Assembly election. Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma (born 1 February 1969) is an Indian politician serving as the 15th and incumbent Chief Minister of Assam. A former member of the Indian National Congress political party. Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected in 2001. Sarma studied at Cotton College and later obtained a bachelor of laws from Government Law College in Guwahati. He later became a solicitor and practised law at Gauhati High Court before his entry to politics. Sarma was the Congress candidate for Jalukbari in 2001 and he defeated AGP leader Bhrigu Phukan. Gopinath Bordoloi
Gopinath Bordoloi (6 June 1890 – 5 August 1950) was a politician and Indian independence activist who served as the first Chief Minister of Assam. He was a follower of the Gandhian principle of non-violence as a political tool.
