''History of the Joke'' is a two-hour television special documentary film that was premiered on February 18, 2008, in the USA on History (U.S. TV channel), History. This special was hosted by Lewis Black and starred Mitch Fatel, Ed Galvez, Jessica Glassberg, George Carlin, Shelley Berman, Jimmy Carr, Jeff Dunham, Steve Byrne, Gallagher (comedian), Gallagher, Patton Oswalt, Aisha Tyler, Robin Williams, Brian Posehn, Greg Fitzsimmons, Gina Yashere, George Lopez, Lynne Koplitz, Kathy Griffin, Dave Attell, and Penn & Teller. Lewis Niles Black (born August 30, 1948) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. His comedy routines often escalate into angry rants about history, politics, religion, or any other cultural trends. Richard J. Wiseman (born 17 September 1966) is a Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. He has written several psychology books. Slapstick is a style of humor involving exaggerated physical activity that exceeds the boundaries of normal physical comedy. Slapstick may involve both intentional violence and violence by mishap, often resulting from inept use of props such as saws and ladders. The term arises from a device developed for use in the broad, physical comedy style known as ''commedia dell'arte'' in 16th-century Italy.
