Hinchinbrooke is a rural community in southern Quebec, in the Châteauguay Valley, in the MRC de Le Haut-Saint-Laurent. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 2,242. History Since the 1980 dissolution of Huntingdon County, Hinchinbrooke is within Le Haut-Saint-Laurent Regional County Municipality. Geography The municipality is situated along the Canada–United States border. It is one of the two southernmost communities in Quebec, along with Elgin, with their tripoint with New York on the Châteauguay River being the southernmost point in the province. The Hinchinbrook Brook (French: ''Rivière Hinchinbrooke'') is a tributary of the Châteauguay River, flowing on the south bank of the Saint Lawrence River, in: * the municipality of Hinchinbrooke, in the administrative region of Montérégie, in the province of Quebec, in Canada; * Franklin County, in New York State, in United States. The lower part of the course of this river is accessible by Brook Road (east-west) and the Herdman Customs climb (north-south). The American part of the course of the river is mainly accessible by the River Street which leads south to the town of Chateaugay. The surface of the Hinchinbrook Brook (except the rapids areas) is generally frozen from mid-December to the end of March; however, safe circulation on the ice is generally done from the end of December to the beginning of March. Hinchinbrooke (1780 Ship)
''Hinchinbrooke'' (or ''Hinchinbrook'') was the Spanish ship ''San Carlos'' that Admiral Rodney's squadron captured on 8 January 1780. She was sold as a prize and in 1781 commenced a voyage as an "extra" ship of the British East India Company. During the voyage a French squadron captured her at the Battle of Porto Praya, but the British Royal Navy recaptured her within a day or so. She was lost in the Hooghly River in 1783 on her return voyage to Britain. ''San Carlos:'' On 8 January 1800 a squadron under the command of Admiral Rodney encountered a convoy of 22 Spanish vessels some 76 leagues ENE of Cape Finisterre. The convoy consisted of seven vessels and ships of war belonging to the Guipuzcoan Company of Caracas, and 15 merchantmen. One of the Company vessels was ''San Carlos'', under the command of Captain Don Firmin Urtizberea. Rodney's squadron captured the entire Spanish convoy. Hinchinbrooke (1814 Ship)
''Hinchinbrook'' was built in America in 1812. By 1814 she was carrying mails for the Post Office Packet Service from Falmouth, Cornwall. In May 1814 she repelled an attack by an American privateer in a single-ship action. She was wrecked in May 1816. Career ''Hinchinbrook'' first appeared in ''Lloyd's Register'' in 1815 in the section listing Falmouth Packets. Her master was James, and her owner the Government Post Office. She had been raised in 1814. She also appeared in the regular listing with the same information, but the addition of the voyage Falmouth–Jamaica. On 14 February 1814 ''Hinchinbrook'' sailed for the Leeward Islands. Engagement: On 2 May 1814 ''Hinchinbrook'' was at when she encountered an American privateer of 18 guns. An engagement ensued during which the privateer, which was full of men, unsuccessfully twice attempted to board ''Hinchinbrook''. After two hours and twenty minutes, the privateer withdrew.
