High Commission Of India, Nicosia
The High Commission of India in Nicosia is the diplomatic mission of India to Cyprus. The high commissioner is Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat. India doesn't recognise Northern Cyprus, and instead uses its mission to cover the range in its jurisdiction. Activities and events Various activities are organised as well. The embassy offers educational programs and scholarships for the diasporan community. Nicosia ( ; el, Λευκωσία, Lefkosía ; tr, Lefkoşa ; hy, Նիկոսիա, romanized: ''Nikosia''; Cypriot Arabic: Nikusiya) is the largest city, capital, and seat of government of Cyprus. It is located near the centre of the Mesaoria plain, on the banks of the River Pedieos. According to Greek mythology, Nicosia ( in Greek) was a siren, one of the daughters of Acheloos and Melpomene and its name translates as "White State" or city of White Gods. Nicosia is the southeasternmost of all EU member states' capitals. It has been continuously inhabited for over 4,500 years and has been the capital of Cyprus since the 10th century. Indians In Cyprus
The community of Indians in Cyprus includes Indian expatriates in Cyprus, as well as Cypriot citizens of Indian origin or descent. Even though Cyprus has a much smaller community of Indians compared to other western countries, the community boasts over 7250 Indians primarily in the field of ICT (Information, Communication, Technology) and shipping industry. A large number are employed in various offshore companies. The multi-national company Amdocs maintains an office in Limassol which currently employs over 250 Indian software programmers. The community also includes many students who have come to Cyprus to pursue higher studies. The population has grown almost ten-fold since 1997, when there were barely 300-400 long term Indians present. Cyprus–India Relations
Cyprus–India relations are the Bilateralism, bilateral relations between the Cyprus and India. India maintains a High Commission in Nicosia. Cyprus maintains a High Commission in New Delhi. History India supported Cyprus during its struggle for independence from British Cyprus (1878–1960), British colonial rule. Diplomatic relations between Cyprus and India were established on 10 February 1962, two years after the former gained independence. The Indian military has participated in United Nations peacekeeping operations in Cyprus on numerous occasions. Three Indian Generals have served as Commanders of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), since its creation in 1964. A road in Larnaca is named after Maj. General Kodandera Subayya Thimayya who died in 1965, while serving as the UNFICYP Force Commander. In 1966, the Government of Cyprus issued a stamp commemorating Thimayya.
