''Hidden Details'' is the eleventh studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in September 2018. Overview ''Hidden Details'' is the first album released under the Soft Machine moniker since '' Land of Cockayne'' in 1981, with a six-night residency at Ronnie Scott's club in 1984 being the last time Soft Machine were active until 2015. Several members from Soft Machine's history operated under the name "Soft Machine Legacy" from 2004 until dropping the "Legacy" from their name in 2015, thus re-activating Soft Machine after 31 years. This album was recorded by the same line-up that released the Soft Machine Legacy album '' Burden of Proof'' in 2013. From the 1984 line-up were drummer John Marshall, who joined Soft Machine in 1972, and guitarist John Etheridge, who joined in 1975 and left in 1978 before re-joining for the 1984 shows. John Stanley Marshall
John Stanley Marshall (born 28 August 1941) is an English drummer and founding member of the jazz rock band Nucleus. From 1972 to 1978, he was the drummer for Soft Machine, replacing Phil Howard when he joined. Marshall was born in Isleworth, Middlesex, and has worked with various jazz and rock bands and musicians, among them J. J. Jackson, Allan Holdsworth, Barney Kessel, Alexis Korner, Graham Collier, Michael Gibbs, Arthur Brown, Keith Tippett, Centipede, Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, Dick Morrissey, Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, John Surman, Charlie Mariano, John Abercrombie, Arild Andersen, and Eberhard Weber's Colours. Since 1999, he has worked with former Soft Machine co-musicians in several Soft Machine-related projects like SoftWare, SoftWorks and Soft Machine Legacy. Fender Rhodes Piano
The Rhodes piano (also known as the Fender Rhodes piano) is an electric piano invented by Harold Rhodes, which became popular in the 1970s. Like a conventional piano, the Rhodes generates sound with keys and hammers, but instead of strings, the hammers strike thin metal tines, which vibrate next to an electromagnetic pickup. The signal is then sent through a cable to an external keyboard amplifier and speaker. The instrument evolved from Rhodes's attempt to manufacture pianos while teaching recovering soldiers during World War II. Development continued after the war and into the following decade. In 1959, Fender began marketing the Piano Bass, a cut-down version; the full-size instrument did not appear until after Fender's sale to CBS in 1965. ''Third'' is the third studio album by the rock band Soft Machine, originally released in 1970 as a double LP, with each side of the original vinyl consisting of a single suite without individual track titles. ''Third'' marks the most major of Soft Machine's several shifts in musical genre over their career, completing their transition from psychedelic music to jazz, and is a significant milestone of the Canterbury scene. Mike Ratledge
Michael Roland Ratledge (born 6 May 1943) is a British musician. A part of the Canterbury scene, he was a founding member of Soft Machine. He was the last founding member to leave the group, doing so in 1976. Biography and career Ratledge was born in Maidstone, Kent, the son of a Canterbury secondary modern school headmaster. As a child, he was educated in classical music, the only kind of music played in his parents' home. He learned to play the piano, and with his friend Brian Hopper, whom he had met at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury, played classical piano and clarinet pieces. Ratledge also met Brian's younger brother Hugh, and Robert Wyatt. In 1961, he met Daevid Allen, who interested them in playing jazz. ''Bundles'' is the eighth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1975. Overview By ''Bundles'', only keyboardist and founding member Mike Ratledge was left from the early Soft Machine line-ups; the other members had all previously been in the jazz-rock band Nucleus. Guitarist Allan Holdsworth's prominent contributions set the album apart from previous Soft Machine recordings, as guitar was an instrument ignored by Soft Machine since 1969's '' Volume Two''. Roy Babbington
Roy Babbington (born 8 July 1940 in Kempston, Bedfordshire, England) is a rock and jazz bassist. He became well known for being a member of the Canterbury scene progressive rock band Soft Machine. Biography Babbington started his musical career in 1958, playing double bass in local jazz bands. At the age of 17 he took up the post of double bass, doubling on electric guitar (on such numbers as Cliff Richard's "Move It" on Monday's Rock 'n' Roll evening) with The Leslie Thorp Orchestra at the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom, where he honed his sight reading skills. After moving to London in 1969, he joined the band Delivery, one of the side roots of the Canterbury scene with Phil Miller, Pip Pyle and Lol Coxhill.
