Area code 724 is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania telephone area code in western and southwestern Pennsylvania, including most of the suburbs of Pittsburgh. It was split from area code 412 on February 1, 1998. Originally, Bell Atlantic wanted to implement 724 as an overlay of 412. However, overlays were still a new concept at the time, and met with some resistance due to the requirement for ten-digit dialing. For this reason, 724 was implemented as a split, with nearly all of the old 412 territory outside Allegheny County getting the new area code, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. It simultaneously overlays the region's two existing area codes, 412 and 724, making ten-digit dialing mandatory in the Pittsburgh area. 412 had served southwestern Pennsylvania for 41 years before 724 was created for most of the old 412 territory outside of Pittsburgh in 1998. Pennsylvania Route 166 (PA 166) is a north–south state highway in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. It follows the path of the Monongahela River along the entire western border of Fayette County. Route description PA 166 begins at an intersection with US 119 in Springhill Township just north of the confluence of the Monongahela and Cheat Rivers at the borough of Point Marion. From this point, PA 166 heads northwest on two-lane undivided New Geneva Road, following the Monongahela River downstream. It is served by the Albert Gallatin Area School District.
