Heusden
Heusden () is a municipality and a town in the South of the Netherlands. It is located between the towns of Waalwijk and 's-Hertogenbosch. The municipality of Heusden, including Herpt, Heesbeen, Hedikhuizen, Doeveren, and Oudheusden, merged with Drunen and Vlijmen in 1997, giving the municipality its current form. The middle part of national park the Loonse en Drunense Duinen is located in the municipality of Heusden. Heusden Castle
Heusden Castle is a ruined major castle in Heusden. History In the 12th century the lords of Heusden had a territory which stretched on both sides of the Oude Maasje. At the time, this which was the main course of the Meuse. In the part south of the Oude Maasje was the main village Oudheusden with a church. In 1130 the main castle of the Lord of Heusden was near this church, on the left bank of the Oude Maasje. At that time, the village Oudheusden was simply called Heusden. In 1202 this castle was destroyed by the Duke of Brabant. After the destruction of his castle, the Lord of Heusden moved his seat to the current Heusden. Heusden was first known as . It was a new settlement north of the Oude Maasje on a meander of the Meuse. The new settlement was also east of a north-south water which connected the Oude Maasje to the Meuse. Drunen
Drunen is a town in the municipality of Heusden in the southern Netherlands. The town is part of a region called the ('long road') which is historically known for its leather and shoe industry. Since 1813, Drunen had been a separate municipality, consisting of the towns Drunen, Elshout, and Giersbergen. Oudheusden
Oudheusden is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is in the municipality of Heusden, about south of the city of Heusden. The name Oudheusden literally means "Old-Heusden", from the Dutch language, Dutch "oud" (English language, English: old) and is used to distinguish from Heusden. Oudheusden was first mentioned in between 1108 and 1121 as Hysdene. Oudheusden was home to 858 people in 1840. Hedikhuizen
Hedikhuizen is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Heusden, about 3 km east of that city. History The village was first mentioned in 997 as Hittinchusen, and means "settlement of the people of Hiddo (person)". Hedikhuizen is a linear settlement along the dike of the Maas. In 1773, the river was canalised and the meander on which Hedikhuizen is situated was cut off. The former Dutch Reformed church dated from the 15th century, and had a 13th century tower. In 1944, it was severely damaged by war. Parts of the tower have been used to restore the western side. The building is nowadays a residential home and studio. Fort Hedikhuizen was part of the defensive works for the city of Heusden. The fort was built between 1860 and 1863, but became obsolete in 1886. Hedikhuizen was home to 227 people in 1840. Herpt
Herpt is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Heusden, about 1 km southeast of the center of the city. History The village was first mentioned between 1108 and 1121 Harpede. The etymology is unclear. The Dutch Reformed church dated from the 15th century, but was destroyed on 5 November 1944 by the Germans and not rebuilt. The Catholic church dates from 1924. Herpt was home to 380 people in 1840. Vlijmen is a town in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Nieuwkuijk
Nieuwkuijk is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Heusden, about 10 km west of 's-Hertogenbosch. History The village was first mentioned in 1383 as Niewekuyc, and means "new settlement of Cuijk". The family of Cuijk used to own land in the area. Castle Onsenoort was built in 1382 by the ''heer'' of the ''heerlijkheid'' Nieuwkuijk. In the 19th century, it became part of the Cistercian monastery Mariënkroon. The tower probably dates from the 14th century. The building of the monastery were built in 1910. The main building and gate were added between 1934 and 1935. In 2016, the abbey closed down.
