Hendrik Jan Smidt
Hendrik Jan Smidt (11 October 1831, in Assen – 14 March 1917, in The Hague) was a Dutch liberal politician. He served as Minister of Justice twice, and was Governor-General of Suriname between 30 July 1885 and 18 July 1888. Johannes Herbert August Willem, Baron van Heerdt tot Eversberg (22 February 1829 – 10 January 1893) was a Dutch naval officer, civil servant, and colonial administrator. He served as Governor of Curaçao and Dependencies from 1 October 1880 until 18 October 1882, and Governor of Suriname from 11 November 1882 until 1 August 1885. Biography Van Heerdt tot Eversberg was born on 22 February 1829 in Zwolle, Netherlands. He joined the Royal Netherlands Navy, and left the navy in 1861 as lieutenant. The same year, he was part of the Dutch–French border commission tasked with mapping the Marowijne River which forms to boundary between Suriname and French Guiana. On 10 April 1862, a map and a report was produced by the commission, and the border was considered solved. In 1885, gold was discovered near the Marowijne River, and the border was in dispute. Anthony Modderman
Anthony Ewoud Jan Modderman (27 September 1838 – 7 August 1885) was a Dutch liberal politician. Modderman was born in Winschoten, to Hendrik Jacob Herman Modderman and Adriana Sibylla Catharina Emmen. He studied Roman and Contemporary Law in Leiden, graduating in 1863, after which he settled in The Hague to become a lawyer. Modderman was appointed as Minister of Justice on 20 August 1879. As minister, he successfully opposed the reintroduction of the death penalty in 1881. He left office on 23 April 1883 and was given the honorary title of Minister of State six days later.
