Hellesøy, Stavanger
Hellesøy or Hedlesøy is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies in an archipelago at the mouths of the Gandsfjorden and Høgsfjorden, about east of the centre of the city of Stavanger. The island lies close between the islands of Lindøy and Kalvøy and together, the three islands form a "neighborhood" within the city of Stavanger. It is the fourth largest city and third largest metropolitan area in Norway (through conurbation with neighboring Sandnes) and the administrative center of Rogaland county. Gandsfjorden
Gandsfjorden or Gandafjorden is a fjord in Rogaland county, Norway. The long Gandsfjorden is an arm off of the large Boknafjorden. It runs between the mainland and the Stavanger Peninsula in the western parts of the municipalities of Stavanger and Sandnes. The entire west and south side of the Gandsfjorden is highly developed and urban as this is the location of the cities of Stavanger and Sandnes, the third largest urban area in Norway. The east side of the fjord is far less developed and it has many mountains and peaks. Høgsfjorden
Høgsfjorden is a fjord in Rogaland county, Norway. It lies in the municipalities of Stavanger, Sandnes, Strand, and Gjesdal. The innermost part of the fjord is located at the village of Frafjord in the municipality of Gjesdal. It flows west to Dirdal and then heads northwards. At the village of Forsand, the Lysefjord branches off to the northeast. The Høgsfjorden continues to the northwest past the islands of Idsal and Idse before emptying into the Horgefjorden (just east of the city of Stavanger) and ultimately into the vast Boknafjorden. Lindøy
Lindøy is an island in the Byfjorden in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies about northeast of the centre of the city of Stavanger. It sits in an archipelago surrounded by the islands of Vassøy, Hellesøy, and Kalvøy. All of those islands are connected to the mainland only by boat. Orphanage The island was used as an orphanage for more than a hundred years, established by Lars Oftedal in the late 1800s. A local adage in Stavanger was that parents would tell their boisterous children to "beware, otherwise I will send to Lindøy!" The reason for the institution of Lindøy was priest and politician Lars Oftedal bought the large island in 1887. The following year opened the so-called ("Rescue Home and Educational Institution") which had space for 30 "perverse and depraved boys."
