Heighington, County Durham
Heighington ( ) is a village in the borough of Darlington and ceremonial county of County Durham, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,395. It is situated between Darlington and Shildon, near Newton Aycliffe. One of its most significant features is St Michael's Church that sits in the middle of a large village green. The church is Norman, except for the 13th-century south aisle and the 19th-century north aisle. A rare feature in this church is a pre-Reformation oak pulpit with six traceried linen fold panels, with an inscription bearing prayers for its donor: an Alexander Flettcher and his wife Agnes. Heighington previously boasted a Methodist Chapel, but this has since been converted into housing. The more recent expansion of the village is in the area around Pinewood Crescent and the area around the Beech Crescent, Manor Court and Orchard Gardens, built 1997. Darlington (borough)
The Borough of Darlington is a unitary authority and borough in County Durham, Northern England. The borough is named after the town of Darlington, and in 2011 had a population of 106,000. It is in the Tees Valley mayoralty. The borough borders three local authority areas; County Durham is to the north and west, Stockton-on-Tees to the east and North Yorkshire to the south, the River Tees forming the border for the latter. Winterton Hospital
Winterton Hospital was a psychiatric hospital north of Sedgefield in County Durham, England. History A site for the facility at Far Winterton, north of Sedgefield, was purchased in 1855. It was designed by the architect John Howison, the surveyor for the county of Durham, as a three-storey corridor plan asylum built in the Elizabethan style with 300 beds for inmates, along with a chapel and superintendent's quarters. The facility opened as Durham County Lunatic Asylum in 1858. A major extension of the hospital, designed by William Crozier Jr. using a pavilion plan in the Italianate style with 400 beds for inmates as well as adding a new chapel, water tower, stables and cottages, was built between 1875 and 1880. The facility became Durham County Mental Hospital in 1925. Further major additions, providing new admission and administration blocks, were made in the 1930s.
