Heerenveen Flyers
The UNIS Flyers are an ice hockey club located in Heerenveen, Netherlands. The team competes in the BeNe League and also takes part in the Dutch Cup. Home games are played in the ice hockey arena which forms part of the Thialf complex. History The UNIS Flyers were founded in 1967 and played their first season in the Eredivisie in 1971-72. The Flyers set the Eredivisie record for the most consecutive championships with 7 between 1976 and 1983. Heerenveen is the smallest Dutch city currently represented in the BeNe League (although the Belgian city of Herentals is smaller). Heerenveen
Heerenveen (, fry, It Hearrenfean ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat"). Heerenveen was not one of the traditional eleven cities in Friesland (Fryslân) as it did not have so-called city rights. However, it is now one of the larger municipalities of the province. The windmill ''Welgelegen'' or ''Tjepkema's Molen'' is the only survivor of seventeen which have stood in Heerenveen. Oudeschoot
Oudeschoot ( fry, Aldskoat) is a village in Heerenveen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,580 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1299 as van Scoeten. The name means "corner of higher land". Oude (old) has been added to distinguish between Nieuweschoot. In 1299, a nunnery of the German order was founded in Oudeschoot, and has existed until 1580. Oudeschoot used to be the capital of the ''grietenij'' (predecessor of a municipality) until 1934. In 1828, the main road from Leeuwarden to Zwolle was built through the village, and was later joined by a railway line. Since 1600, the Skoattermerk, an annual market is held on the second day of Pentecost, and is the oldest extant market in the northern provinces. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1752. Delfzijl (; gos, Delfsiel) is a city and former municipality with a population of 25,651 in the province of Groningen (province), Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Delfzijl was a sluice between the Delf (canal), Delf and the Ems (river), Ems, which became fortified settlement in the 16th century. The fortifications were removed in the late 19th century.
