Oudeschoot
Oudeschoot ( fry, Aldskoat) is a village in Heerenveen in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,580 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1299 as van Scoeten. The name means "corner of higher land". Oude (old) has been added to distinguish between Nieuweschoot. In 1299, a nunnery of the German order was founded in Oudeschoot, and has existed until 1580. Oudeschoot used to be the capital of the ''grietenij'' (predecessor of a municipality) until 1934. In 1828, the main road from Leeuwarden to Zwolle was built through the village, and was later joined by a railway line. Since 1600, the Skoattermerk, an annual market is held on the second day of Pentecost, and is the oldest extant market in the northern provinces. The Dutch Reformed church was built in 1752. Heerenveen
Heerenveen (, fry, It Hearrenfean ) is a town and municipality in the province of Friesland (Fryslân), in the Northern Netherlands. In 2021, the town had a population of 29,790 (1 January) while the municipality had a population 50,859 (1 July). History The town was established in 1551 by three lords as a location for the purpose of digging peat which was used for fuel, hence the name (''heer'' is "lord", ''veen'' is "peat"). Heerenveen was not one of the traditional eleven cities in Friesland (Fryslân) as it did not have so-called city rights. However, it is now one of the larger municipalities of the province. The windmill ''Welgelegen'' or ''Tjepkema's Molen'' is the only survivor of seventeen which have stood in Heerenveen. Zwolle () is a city and municipality in the Northeastern Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of Overijssel and the province's second-largest municipality after Enschede with a population of 130,592 as of 1 December 2021. A ''grietenij'' was a forerunner to the ''gemeente'' or municipality in Frisia, particularly in Friesland, and also in Groningen which are now a part of the Netherlands. From the end of the 16th century until 1851, there were a total of 30 ''grietenijen'' in Friesland. The term ''grietenij'' means the administrative district of a ''grietman''. The term ''grietman'' means a man who greets. The ''grietenijen'' were found in the counties of Oostergo, Westergo and Zevenwouden.
