Hayford Peak
Hayford Peak, elevation , is the highest mountain in the Sheep Range of Clark County, Nevada, United States. It is the seventh-most topographically prominent peak in the state. The nearest taller mountain is Mount Charleston, to the southwest. In the winter months, there is snow on the peak, which usually lasts until early spring. Sheep Range
The Sheep Range is located north of Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States. It is found in both Clark and Lincoln Counties in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. The mountains reach a peak at Hayford Peak, above sea level between the Las Vegas Range to the east and the Desert Range to the west. The Sheep Range lies in a generally north-south direction. The Great Basin Divide starts an east-west transect at the northeast of the Spring Mountains, with the east-west transect border south being all of the Las Vegas Valley, and a midsection, north perimeter of the watershed for the Las Vegas Wash. In topography, prominence (also referred to as autonomous height, relative height, and shoulder drop in US English, and drop or relative height in British English) measures the height of a mountain or hill's summit relative to the lowest contour line encircling it but containing no higher summit within it. Desert National Wildlife Refuge
The Desert National Wildlife Refuge is a protected wildlife refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, located north of Las Vegas, Nevada, in northwestern Clark and southwestern Lincoln counties, with much of its land area lying within the southeastern section of the Nevada Test and Training Range. The Desert NWR, created on May 20, 1936, is the largest wildlife refuge in the lower 48 states of the United States, encompassing of the Mojave Desert in the southern part of Nevada. The refuge was originally established at 2.25 million acres. In 1940 840,000 acres were transferred to the Department of Defense. Hidden Forest Cabin
The Hidden Forest Cabin is an old game warden's dwelling in Clark County, Nevada, United States in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. It is located on Hidden Forest Road, in the Hidden Forest in the Sheep Range along the route to Hayford Peak. History The Hidden Forest Cabin was initially thought to have been built in the 1880s, but in 2020, it was confirmed that the cabin was built in 1931 by World War I veteran Clarence Russell as a personal isolated dwelling. The cabin remained as his home until next year on June 17, 1932 when Russell headed to another cabin in the area at White Rock Canyon belonging to C. P. Moore in his car after previously consuming alcohol that day. Drunk, Russell confronted him and shot him dead with a single bullet between the eyes, with his motive likely being his resent for Moore locating his cabin within a close proximity to his own on the other side of Hayford Peak.
