Hassell Model
Hassell is a multidisciplinary architecture, design and urban planning practice with offices in Australia, China, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Founded in 1937/8 in Adelaide, South Australia, the firm's former names include Claridge, Hassell and McConnell; Hassell, McConnell and Partners; and Hassell and Partners Pty. Ltd. They are particularly known for the Adelaide Festival Centre complex, which opened in 1973. History Hassell was founded in Adelaide, South Australia in 1938. From 1937, Colin Hassell worked with Philip R. Claridge and Associates, with Claridge, Hassell and McConnell being established as a partnership which included Jack McConnell. Hassell served in the Australian Army during the Second World War, resuming his place in the firm in 1945. General Post Office, a colonial-era building situated on 141 King William Street on the north-west corner of King William Street and Victoria Square, is the former General Post Office for South Australia, Australia, Postal services operated from the building between 6 May 1872 and 11 October 2019. Adelaide Festival Theatre
Adelaide Festival Centre, Australia's first multi-purpose arts centre and the home of South Australia's performing arts, was built in the 1970s, designed by Hassell Architects. The Festival Theatre opened in June 1973 with the rest of the centre following soon afterwards. Modernist
Modernism is both a philosophical and arts movement that arose from broad transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. John Morphett (architect)
John Neville Morphett (1 August 1932 – 25 March 2016) was an Australian architect, known for his role as lead designer of the Adelaide Festival Centre. Early life and education John was born in Johor Bahru, Malaya, a son of surveyor John William Morphett and his wife Nellie, née Ireland. He was educated at Christ Church Grammar School, Perth and St Peter's College, Adelaide, and studied architecture at the University of Adelaide and the South Australian School of Mines and Industries. During university semester breaks, Morphett worked part-time for architects Hassell, McConnell and Partners, with whom he was employed after graduation, and had a continuing relationship for forty years. He undertook further training in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate School, where lecturers included Le Corbusier, Philip Johnson, Richard Neutra and Paul Rudolph, and graduated with a Master of Architecture degree.
