Halymeniales
Halymeniales is an order of red algae belonging to the class Florideophyceae and the subclass Rhodymeniophycidae. The type species is ''Halymenia'' . The red algae colour comes from photosynthetic pigments (phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin). Then the various blends of relative amounts of these 3 and chlorophyll, influences the plant colour, which can vary from dark red to blue, brown, or greenish. History In 1996, Saunders and Kraft recognized a new name, the Halymeniales, for the red algal order that was previously known as the ''Cryptonemiales'' , based on small-subunit rRNA phylogenetic analyses. The adapted order of Halymeniales originally held the families of ''Halymeniaceae'' and ''Sebdeniaceae'' , and it was characterized by taxa with a multi-axial thallus, non-procarpic female reproductive development, outwardly directed carpogonial branches and intercalary auxiliary cells (Saunders and Kraft, 1996). Galactan
Galactan (galactosan) is a polysaccharide consisting of polymerized galactose. In general, galactans in natural sources contain a core of galactose units connected by α(1→3) or α(1→6), with structures containing other monosaccharides as side-chains. Galactan derived from '' Anogeissus latifolia'' is primarily α(1→6), but galactan from acacia trees is primarily α(1→3). They were also thought only to exhibit apical growth, but there are genera known to grow by intercalary growth. Most, but not all, genera have three phases to the life cycle. Red Algae
Red algae, or Rhodophyta (, ; ), are one of the oldest groups of eukaryotic algae. The Rhodophyta also comprises one of the largest phyla of algae, containing over 7,000 currently recognized species with taxonomic revisions ongoing. The majority of species (6,793) are found in the Florideophyceae (class), and mostly consist of multicellular, marine algae, including many notable seaweeds. Red algae are abundant in marine habitats but relatively rare in freshwaters. Approximately 5% of red algae species occur in freshwater environments, with greater concentrations found in warmer areas. Except for two coastal cave dwelling species in the asexual class Cyanidiophyceae, there are no terrestrial species, which may be due to an evolutionary bottleneck in which the last common ancestor lost about 25% of its core genes and much of its evolutionary plasticity. ''Halymenia'' a genus of a macroscopic red algae that grows in oceans worldwide. Species have been found in cold temperate areas but the highest diversity is found in warm temperate and tropical regions. For example, 41 names have been reported for the Indo-Pacific (Guiry & Guiry, 2011). Silva et al. (1996) listed 22 names (including two varieties) for the Indian Ocean.
