Halford, Shropshire
Halford is a hamlet in south Shropshire, England. It lies just east of the market town of Craven Arms, on the other side of the River Onny. It was once the centre of a separate civil parish, but is now part of the civil parish of Craven Arms, which was formed in 1987 by merging the parishes of Halford and Stokesay. These two older entities continued as parish wards, however a review of the governance of Craven Arms in 2012 concluded that these two wards would be abolished from May 2013. Until the 19th century, Halford was a detached part of the parish of Bromfield. The detached part ran up Long Lane, on the other side of the River Onny. Being part of Bromfield brought it into the hundred of Culvestan and from c. 1100 that of Munslow (Lower Division). Bromfield Priory held land at Halford, explaining the connection. Halford Mackinder
Sir Halford John Mackinder (15 February 1861 – 6 March 1947) was an English geographer, academic and politician, who is regarded as one of the founding fathers of both geopolitics and geostrategy. He was the first Principal of University Extension College, Reading (which became the University of Reading) from 1892 to 1903, and Director of the London School of Economics from 1903 to 1908. While continuing his academic career part-time, he was also the Member of Parliament for Glasgow Camlachie from 1910 to 1922. From 1923, he was Professor of Geography at the London School of Economics. Halford is an American heavy metal band formed in 1999 by British singer Rob Halford, who is best known as the lead vocalist for heavy metal band Judas Priest. Halford formed the band to return to his heavy metal roots. His two previous projects were a "street metal"-style band called Fight and the industrial metal band 2wo. Recordings Halford's first album, ''Resurrection'', was released in 2000 to critical acclaim. It was subsequently included in Martin Popoff's ''The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time''. In addition, the songs "Silent Screams" and the title-track "Resurrection" were included in Popoff's list. Halford Baronets
Three baronetcies were created for different families bearing the name of Halford, but related to one another. The first baronetcy was created in 1641 for Richard Halford in the Baronetage of England. It became extinct in 1780 with the death of the seventh and last baronet. The second baronetcy was created in 1706, also in the Baronetage of England, but became extinct in 1720 in the second generation. The third and last baronetcy was created in 1809 in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom for a prominent physician descended maternally from the fifth Baronet of the previous creation. The Halford Special was a Grand Prix racing car of the 1920s built by engine designer Major Frank Halford on the chassis of an early Side Valve Aston Martin tourer. It was one of the most advanced British-built racing cars of the mid-1920s and had many racing successes. Halford himself was a freelance engine designer who did work for both the de Havilland, de Havilland Aircraft Company and Napier & Son. History Halfords was founded by Frederick Rushbrooke, in Birmingham in 1892, as a wholesale ironmongery. The company takes its name from Halford Street in Leicester, where Rushbrooke opened a store in 1902 and started selling cycling goods. Halfords opened its two hundredth store in 1931, and purchased the Birmingham Bicycle Company in 1945. It opened its three hundredth store in 1968. The company became a part of Burmah Oil in 1965, following a takeover battle between Burmah and Smiths Industries.
