HMS Dunkirk (1754)
HMS ''Dunkirk'' was a 60-gun fourth-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by Edward Allin at Woolwich Dockyard to the draught specified by the 1745 Establishment as amended in 1750, and launched on 22 July 1754. Career HMS ''Dunkirk'' was sent to America in 1755, along with several other ships, under Vice-Admiral Edward Boscawen. On 5 June she spotted four French ships which were bound for Canada under the command of Admiral Bois de la Mothe. ''Dunkirk'', and several other ships gave chase. ''Dunkirk'' came alongside the 64-gun and requested the captain meet with the vice admiral, who was then about away. After the captain of ''Alcide'' refused, ''Dunkirk'' opened fire. Soon afterwards, came alongside the French at which ''Alcide'' struck her colours. 1745 Establishment
The 1745 Establishment was the third and final formal establishment of dimensions for ships to be built for the Royal Navy. It completely superseded the previous 1719 Establishment, which had subsequently been modified in 1733 and again in 1741 (but not formally replaced on either occasion). In 1603 all English warships with a compliment of fewer than 160 men were known as 'small ships'. In 1625/26 to establish pay rates for officers a six tier naval ship rating system was introduced.Winfield 2009 These small ships were divided into three tiers, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth rates. Edward Allin
Edward Allin (c.1720–1795) was an 18th century shipbuilder (and designer) to the Royal Navy mainly based at Portsmouth Dockyard and Chatham Dockyard. He is most notable as the master shipwright of HMS Victory Nelson's flagship. Life He first appears in Royal Navy records as a Master Caulker at Chatham Dockyard in 1750. In 1751 he became Assistant Master Shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard but after only a few months moved back to Chatham Dockyard. Promoted to Master Shipwright in 1752 he took over Sheerness Dockyard then Woolwich in March 1753. In 1755 he replaced Peirson Lock as Master Shipwright of Portsmouth (Peirson had succeeded to Joseph Allin in 1742. In 1762 he relocated to Chatham Dockyard with his role at Portsmouth being filled by Thomas Bucknall. He left Chatham in July 1767, pensioned off by the Royal Navy. Woolwich Dockyard (formally H.M. Dockyard, Woolwich, also known as The King's Yard, Woolwich) was an English Royal Navy Dockyard, naval dockyard along the river Thames at Woolwich in north-west Kent, where many ships were built from the early 16th century until the late 19th century. Edward Boscawen
Admiral of the Blue Edward Boscawen, PC (19 August 171110 January 1761) was a British admiral in the Royal Navy and Member of Parliament for the borough of Truro, Cornwall, England. He is known principally for his various naval commands during the 18th century and the engagements that he won, including the siege of Louisburg in 1758 and Battle of Lagos in 1759. He is also remembered as the officer who signed the warrant authorising the execution of Admiral John Byng in 1757, for failing to engage the enemy at the Battle of Minorca (1756). Louisbourg
Louisbourg is an unincorporated community and former town in Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. History The French military founded the Fortress of Louisbourg in 1713 and its fortified seaport on the southwest part of the harbour, naming it in honour of Louis XIV. The harbour had been used by European mariners since at least the 1590s, when it was known as English Port and Havre à l'Anglois, the French settlement that dated from 1713. The settlement was burned the first day the British landed during the Siege of Louisbourg (1745).
